'Demure' Chosen As Word Of The Year 2024
Nov 26 2024 Share

Dictionary.com has selected demure as its 2024 Word of the Year, thanks to its viral rise on social media. The term gained widespread attention after Chicago-based TikTok influencer Jools Lebron used it in an August video admiring her workplace makeup style.

In the clip, Lebron described her look as “very demure, very mindful,” emphasising professionalism and simplicity.

The audio quickly became a viral trend, used in thousands of videos and even referenced by celebrities, NASA, and the White House.

The popularity of demure saw a 1,200% increase in searches on Dictionary.com between January and August, with peak interest around mid-August, when searches surged 14-fold.

By then, demure had 200 times more searches than before the trend began. It outpaced contenders like brainrot, extreme weather, and Midwest nice to claim the top spot.

While the announcement drew praise from some, others criticised it as pandering to fleeting trends. Critics argued the word’s popularity was short-lived, questioning its significance.

Lebron, meanwhile, benefited from the trend, gaining widespread recognition as media outlets chronicled her rise. The mixed reactions highlight ongoing debates about the criteria for such accolades in the age of social media influence.

DonnaJean Wilde, a 59-year-old Canadian grandmother, set a new Guinness World Record for the most pushups by a woman in one hour, completing 1,575 pushups.

This surpassed the previous record of 1,207 with 17 minutes to spare. The event, held in front of her family, including 11 of her 12 grandchildren, showcased Wilde’s resilience and determination.

A sign from her supporters aptly read, “My grandma is officially amazing!”

Wilde maintained proper form throughout, meeting strict guidelines requiring a 90-degree elbow bend and full extension. She managed 620 pushups in the first 20 minutes but faced challenges later as her shoulder briefly dislocated and reset itself. Despite this, she powered through to achieve her goal.

This is Wilde’s second Guinness World Record. In March, she held the abdominal plank position for 4 hours, 30 minutes, and 11 seconds. Pushups played a significant role in her plank training, sparking her passion for the exercise.

Wilde credits her success to staying active and setting health goals, encouraging others to believe in themselves. “Plan to attack each day,” she advised, emphasising the importance of pursuing passions to “write your own story” and age with strength and purpose.
