In the second quarter of 2024, road traffic accidents increased by 4.0% compared to the same period in 2023, reaching a total of 4,436 incidents.

However, casualties decreased by 7.9% to 409, with three fatalities reported. The Northern Harbour district had the highest number of accidents, totalling 1,520, or 34.3% of all cases.

Despite the rise in accidents, the number of grievously injured individuals fell to 102, comprising 64 drivers, 8 passengers, and 30 pedestrians or cyclists. The fatalities involved two drivers who crashed into property and one pedestrian.

The majority of the grievously injured were males (72.5%), and most casualties (47.9%) involved passenger cars.

The most accidents occurred on Tuesdays (752 cases) and between 12:00 – 14:59 (971 cases). Birkirkara had the highest number of accidents (294 cases), while San Lawrenz, L-Għasri, and Ta’ Kerċem recorded fewer than five each.

The Gozo and Comino district saw the highest increase in accidents at 23.0%, while the Western district had the smallest increase at 3.0%.
