Debate sparks over mask-wearing during childbirth

Nov 17 2020 Share

Debates regarding the controversial decision to impose mask-wearing during childbirth have emerged around the world after the intense trauma caused during the process.

Locally, a petition of more than 1,200 signatures was created to appeal for the removal of mask-wearing during childbirth for women who test negative and the introduction of rapid-testing for women who go into labour spontaneously.

The argument being made by health practitioners is that situations of false negatives could occur, where the damage cause to medical staff could be irreparable especially for professionals such as midwives and mask-wearing would ultimately protect the staff, the mother and the baby.
