The Ministry for the Environment, through WasteServ, has launched the first phase of a transformative €37 million greening project that will convert 23,800 square metres of land into a green public space.

“This project clearly reflects the Government’s commitment to a more sustainable Malta. As we’ve done in other areas, we are creating open green spaces that contribute to a better environment and, more importantly, offer enjoyable areas for the public. This time, we’re turning a former waste facility into a public park — fulfilling another promise from our electoral programme,” said Environment Minister Miriam Dalli.

The project is taking place at the site of the former Sant’Antnin waste facility, where operations ended in December 2022.

WasteServ has since dismantled equipment and prepared the site. Phase one, valued at around €4 million, includes a three-storey car park with park-and-ride services, three water reservoirs for irrigation and rainwater collection, and a 4,200 square metre artificial pond aimed at boosting biodiversity.

Expected to be completed by early next year, this phase also features a boundary wall and landscaping with mature trees and native shrubs. WasteServ will reuse 33% of the excavated material in line with its sustainability goals.

A €33 million second phase will follow, adding further landscaping, a water filtration system, exhibition areas, a learning centre, greenhouse with aquaponics, and a food court.

CEO Richard Bilocca confirmed an additional €500 million investment in Magħtab to further mitigate the long-standing environmental impacts on local residents.
