#CurfewForMen trends in UK after Sarah Everard disappearance

After the tragic disappearance and discoveries connected to the late Sarah Everard, the hashtag Curfew For Men has started trending in the UK. Sarah, 33, disappeared off the streets on March 3rd at around 9:00 pm after walking from a friend’s house in Clapham, South London. A Metropolitan police officer was arrested on suspicion of her murder, with announcements that human remains linked to Sarah were found in woodland in Ashford, Kent.

Twitter has recently been flooded with tweets sharing the hashtag ‘Curfew For Men’, rousing both support and outrage at the concept. Many are pointing out that curfews for women have been real. This hashtag however seeks to flip the script onto the perpetrators instead of the victims, properly addressing the issue, as many claim.

179 COVID-19 cases registered with 314 recoveries

Malta has registered 179 new cases of COVID-19 in the past 24 hours from 4,046 swab tests, while 314 patients have recovered. This information was announced by the official Facebook page of Malta’s Ministry for Health.

As of Saturday 19th March 2021, 138,264 vaccine doses were administered of which 42,557 were 2nd doses.

To date, Malta has registered 27,694 COVID-19 cases in total, of which: 24,432 have recovered, 364 died and 2,898 are still active.

Police patrols to ensure no mass gatherings occur on public feast

On another public feast celebration of St. Joseph during the COVID-19 pandemic, the Malta Police Force has administered several of its officers on patrols to ensure that no large group of people convene. Measures have been put in place that limit more than four people to meet outside and no more than 2 households inside.

The Malta Police Force have reported that so far no measure breach has been found as they continue their patrols. The authorities also encourage anyone who encounter measure breaches to contact them to try and mitigate the spread as much as possible since public gatherings are more likely to occur given the advent of a public holiday.

ITU admissions at their highest following rise in COVID-19 cases

There are currently six Intensive Treatment Units in operation in Malta, with the admission rate being at its highest just last week since the pandemic hit. The rate stood at 2.33 per 100,000 people during the week ending 14th March. Published by the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control, the figures include all patients with a steep rise leading to a surge for intensive care.

With the UK variant spreading throughout the community and new cases of South African variant, there are currently 29 people in ITUs with serious COVID-19 cases and three in Gozo’s. Four ITUs are specifically for the pandemic, another for general use and another at Gozo’s general hospital. The seventh is currently on stand-by as new cases are registered daily.
