In a comment made to local newspaper The Malta Independent, president of the Malta Entertainment Industry and Arts Association (MEIA) Howard Keith Debono stated that COVID-19 measures related to events must be eased at risk of having the situation ‘exploding’ more than it already has.

Mass illegal gatherings in the hundreds have been happening on a week-to-week basis after establishments close at midnight, with little to no form of COVID-19 measures while controlled and limited mass gatherings remain disallowed and restrictive measures for performers remain in place.

The MEIA, together with culture and entertainment campaign restart have proposed a number of measures related to the reopening of controlled events while the former has called for a demonstration titled ‘Daqshekk Siekta’.

Other documentation and proofs for  PCR/vaccine certificates are allegedly being checked in a single space. There are also reportedly multiple checks passengers have to go through, causing many passengers to have to wait for prolonged periods of time in such large crowds. Sources informing this newsroom stated that the airport does not have enough security and staff to ease the flow of documentation.

In a statement on Friday afternoon, the Malta International Airport stated that it regretted the “inconvenience and anxiety” endured by those arriving in Malta as a result of the long queues that are forming at the airport and once again called on the Superintendent of Public Health to digitalise the health document verification process completely to ensure a smoother and faster process.

Botswana’s government has announced the unearthing of one of the largest diamonds ever. Presented to President Mokgweetsi Masisi on Wednesday, the diamond, a 1,098-carat stone, is believed to be the third largest gem-quality diamond ever found. The diamond was discovered earlier this month at the Jwaneng mine, approximately 75 miles away from Gaborone, the country’s capital.

An official tweet by the country’s Government stated that ‘proceeds from the diamond will be used to advance national development in the country.’ The mine usually yields between 12.5 million and 15 million carats of diamonds a year. The largest diamond ever recorded to present date is the 3,106-carat Cullinan Diamond found in South Africa back in 1905.
