Yesterday, Sunday, November 24th, Valletta’s streets became a platform for urgent calls to end violence against women as various activist groups and individuals, held a powerful demonstration in front of Malta’s courts.

This rally, timed ahead of the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, united participants under the theme Her Plight, Our Fight.

Activists expressed collective outrage at the pervasive culture of violence against women in Malta. Banners and placards carried bold messages, and speakers denounced the societal and systemic failings that perpetuate abuse.

A visual installation commemorated the 32 women murdered by male aggressors in Malta over recent decades.

Speakers highlighted the multifaceted nature of gender-based violence, from domestic abuse to public harassment, trafficking, and systemic neglect by institutions.

They criticised the justice system’s inefficiencies and the police’s failure to act decisively, citing long-standing cases like Sion Grech’s as examples of systemic failure.

The demonstrators vowed to continue the fight until homes, workplaces, and streets are safe for women, and society stands united against all forms of abuse.

A tragic car crash in northern France last Saturday claimed the lives of 42-year-old Laetitia Savary and her sons, Naël, 8, and Yanis, 10. The accident occurred on the A26 motorway near Gavrelle when a car driven by a 52-year-old Maltese man collided into their vehicle at high speed.

The woman and her children were declared dead at the scene, while the driver, found to be under the influence of drugs, was hospitalised with serious injuries. He is now under investigation for involuntary manslaughter.

The victims’ hometown of Vimy mourned their loss with a silent march, where residents carried white flowers and candles.

Organized by the boys’ school, a parents’ association, and a local football club, the march saw participants walk from the town’s stadium to the school and town hall. Handwritten tributes from classmates adorned the town hall, expressing grief and remembrance.

A crowdfunding campaign launched to support the victims’ funeral has raised over €17,000. Psychological support is being provided to first responders who attended the harrowing scene. Investigations into the crash are ongoing.
