COVID-19 victims remembered in Holy Week installation in Ghajnsielem

The COVID-19 pandemic brought with it the loss of many loved ones. Ghaqda Armar Ghajnsielem commemorated all of the victims of the pandemic in a breath-taking installation on Gozo church’s parapet stairs. The installation was called ‘The Cross, Jesus and You’, and included 800 crosses constructed from recycled wood. The whole instalment is lit up in violet after sunset, representing Lent.

The 394 victims of the virus were symbolised by crosses painted white. As Easter sees its celebration under a semi-lockdown to mitigate the spread for the second year in a row, the project directed by Ghajnsielem deputy mayor Franco Ciangura symbolises the cross all the Maltese are carrying as we make our way through these difficult times together.

Authorities allowed to enter residences to check on measures

Superintendent of Health Charmaine Gauci confirmed that police officers have been granted delegated authority to enter residences to check whether the new health measures are being adhered to. Questioned during a COVID-19 bulletin, Gauci confirmed that they are allowed to enter private property soo long as a report is filed.

Through the Public Health Act, a number of entities such as environmental health officers, Armed Forces of Malta, Malta Tourism Authority and Local Enforcement Systems Agency have been delegated such authority to enforce the law. They are allowed entry only on the basis of a report or if there are suspicions that a residence has a number of people above that allowed.

Chris Fearne says Malta will be one of the safest travel spots in summer

Deputy Prime Minister and Health Minister Chris Fearne has stated that Malta will be one of the safest sports to travel in summer. Interviewed on CNBC, Fearne was asked about the situation and vaccination context in Malta, to which he responded that cases are decreasing along with hospital strains easing.

Malta has also marked the highest vaccination rates in the EU and thus will be one of the safest countries for tourists to visit. Most of the population will be vaccinated by summer, stated Fearne. One third of the population has currently received at least the first dose of the vaccine, with 13% having received both doses. Responding to criticism of having too many vaccines, Fearne said that any surplus can be donated to countries both inside and outside the EU.

Stranger Things star Millie Bobbie Brown has never seen a Marvel film

Despite being known for fantasy stories such as the fan favourite Stranger Things, ‘Eleven’ actress Millie Bobbie Brown stared that she prefers movies that depict real life. When asked about which superhero movie she prefers, she stated she never watched a superhero film but prefers movies such as the Notebook. She says she has no issue starring in fantasy stories, but her off-screen cinema watching habits are drawn to more real life narratives.

Brown has recently even appeared in a Godzilla film, but since she’s doing fantasy on screen, she’d rather stick to more realistic films, preferring even Jurassic Park to Harry Potter.
