COVID-19 Measures: A Timeline

May 6 2021

During today’s COVID-19 public health conference, Deputy Prime Minister Chris Fearne and Superintendent for Public Health Prof. Charmaine Gauci set a roadmap related to easing of COVID-19 measures in Malta. The measures are as follows:

24th May

Snack bars and restaurants to open until 12AM
Pools to open until 8PM (without activities)
Gyms and fitness centres to reopen (classes not allowed)
Day centres to reopen
Contact sports training for ages 17+ to continue
Non-contact sports competitions to continue without spectators

1st June

Weddings to continue in line with announced protocol
English schools to reopen on campus

7th June

Number of persons permitted on the same table in restaurants and snack bars up to 6
Cinemas and theatres to reopen
Bars and band clubs to open until midnight with seated clients
Gaming and betting outlets to reopen
Contact sports and team sport competitions to continue without spectators for ages 17+
Groups of 6 permitted in public

28th June

Contact sports for those younger than 17 to continue
Summer schools to reopen

Vaccine certificate could be utilised for mass & sporting events

With regards to the vaccine certificate and events, Deputy Prime Minister and Health Minister Chris Fearne announced that internal discussions are being held with mass activities being taken into consideration.

While no announcement was made regarding the fate of mass events, Dr. Fearne revealed that the vaccine certificate could be utilised for mass activities like sporting events & village feasts.

However, he went on to state that there is no rush for mass activities as spread from a mass activity could set Malta back weeks, if not months.

Bars and Band Clubs set to open by 7th June

Addressing a press conference this morning, Deputy Prime Minister Chris Fearne unveiled the measure easing plans for the current month of May and upcoming month of June. Should the number of epidemiological situation continue to see a decrease in cases with no significant increase, the following measures will be put in place;

Restaurants and Snack bars will be allowed to increase the number of people sitting at a table from 4 to 6. Bars and band clubs will be allowed to open up.

Theatres and cinemas will be allowed to open. Team sports will also be allowed with no spectators.

Contact sports for under 17s will be green lit along with summer schools.

Gaming and betting outlets will also be green lit.

Masks on beaches no longer mandatory from 1st of June

May 6 2021

Following a public debate on scientific plausibility, masks on beaches will be no longer mandatory from the 1st of June, Chris Fearne announced during today’s public health conference.

Fearne stated that after review, while masks are essential in reducing the spread, they are not practical on beaches and while recommended, this rule will no longer be enforceable by law.

Today’s public health conference revealed a number of measures and easing of restrictions along with a COVID-19 roadmap going forward with the summer season just around the corner.
