A group of Malta Police Officers went viral on Saturday after cheering on a a boy during the Ħamrun San Gejtanu feast.

Taking to Facebook Group ‘Are You Being Served? (Malta & Gozo) Original’, Francesca Buhagiar thanked the group of community officers who took her son and cheered him on as the band played on.

‘We hear a lot of complaints about police. But yesterday I confirmed how many officers with a good heart actually exist’, wrote Francesca. ‘There are no words because the video speaks for itself about how joyful the officers were with my son.’

‘These are community officers we need more of. The photo was taken with their permission. This also took place in a few minutes as they continued on with their work.’

The post was picked up by the Malta Police Force itself, which released a social media post, saying;

‘Amidst the commitments at Hamrun yesterday, Ms Francesa Buhagiar captured a touching moment that perfectly encapsulates the spirit of these celebrations. A heart-warming brief encounter between our officers and a little boy filled with curiosity and excitement reflects the strong bond between our community and the #maltapolice. Part of the Ħamrun San Gejtanu feast tradition is running up the church steps with the grand statue as the feast-goers cheer on the culmination of the jubilation.

The moment is highly anticipated as the carriers of the statue attempt to run up, and often succeed in doing so, the church steps whilst carrying the massive weight.

Airports Closed Off As Mount Etna Erupts

Airports Closed Off As Mount Etna Erupts
Aug 14 2023 Share

Catania and Comiso airports have been shut down due to a recent eruption of Mount Etna volcano.

The eruption caused an ash cloud to spread over the southeastern part of Sicily and the Mediterranean.

The closure led to the cancellation of a 6am flight from Malta to Catania. Flights bound for Malta were being redirected to avoid the ash cloud.

Catania airport has announced plans to resume operations by 1pm.

The eruption resulted in ash falling on Rifugio Sapienza, a popular location on Mount Etna often visited by Maltese travelers.

This closure of Catania airport follows its recent return to full operation, which occurred after a phased reopening subsequent to a significant terminal fire in mid-July.
