Could Netflix password sharing become illegal?

Upon the advent of streaming services like Netflix and the later Disney+ and/or HBO, password sharing became a very common practice for those too lazy to create their own new account.

However, at least in the UK, a government agency has suggested that sharing passwords for streaming sites may be illegal and could lead to a court sentence.

In recent months, Netflix decided to announce that it might monetise password sharing as part of a new, erm, ‘thoughtful approach’ due to a successful pilot scheme in some reasons.

So far, Netflix did not suggest plans to take legal action in such incidents but the UK’s Intellectual Property Office (IPO) has now said that log-in sharing may be against the law.

Through a statement published Monday 19th December, as revealed by The Guardian, it referred to ‘accessing…without paying a subscription’ as possibly being considered an act of piracy.

It would still depend on the service provider to take action through the courts if required. So we might be safe for now, but for those who have been slacking on actually creating their subscription… you might want to plan ahead.

Worker grievously injured in Hal Gharghur construction site

Police were informed earlier today at around 0830hrs that their assistance was needed in Triq Santa Katerina, Ħal Għargħur.

Preliminary investigations showed that a section of a wall had fallen onto a worker as he was working on the construction site.

A medical team was called onto the site, with an ambulance transporting the 37-year-old man from Imtarfa to Mater Dei. He was later certified as having suffered grievous injuries.

Investigations are still ongoing.

Marsa traffic accident between three vehicles

Police were informed of a traffic accident this morning at around 0830hrs of a traffic accident on the Marsa-Hamrun Bypass in Marsa.

Preliminary investigations showed that a crash had taken place between 3 vehicles; a Maruti Zen driven by a 76-year-old man resident of Ħal Tarxien, a Mazda Demio driven by a 26-year-old woman resident of Fgura and a Peugeot 2008 driven by a 36-year-old woman resident of Siġġiewi.

A medical team was brought onto the scene, with an ambulance taking the Maruti driver to Mater Dei Hospital for the required aid. He was later certified as having suffered grievous injuries.

The other people involved in the incident did not suffer any injuries. Police investigations are ongoing.

Leave your car keys at home

The first step in avoiding drunk driving is completely eliminating the possibility of actually being able to drive. So if you’re going out for a heavy night this festive season, or any other time, make sure you leave your car keys at home.

Organise drinks at home rather than going out

Organising seasonal celebrations at home eliminates one of the biggest contributors to drunk driving: the need to get from point A to B. While drinking excessively is discouraged, you can feel much safer drinking if you’re actually sleeping in the same place you’re vibing.

Take your friends’ car keys if they’re too drunk

Do not be afraid to do this. Hiding your friends’ keys if they’re too drunk will do nothing except protect them. Sometimes, admitting you’re drunk or unable to drive may be a hard pill to swallow so sometimes you just need someone to do it for you.

Don’t give in to peer pressure

Bad influences exist everywhere. Don’t give in to any claims or suggestions made by wrong people who think driving whilst under the influence of alcohol is okay: book a taxi.

Offer friends to sleep over if they’ve had one too many

Beyond taking care of yourself, take on the responsibility of protecting your friends & family this festive season. If you, or the owner of where you live allows it, offer your friends to sleep over if they’ve had a drink too many.
