Corradino prison cost Malta €24 million in 2020

Information tabled in Parliament shows how Malta’s prison expenditure stood at €24 million in 2020. Tabled by Home Affairs Minister Byron Camilleri after a question by Nationalist MP Chris Said, the capital expenditure at the Corradino Correctional Facility (CCF) was unveiled to have stood at €1.7 million and recurrent expenditure at €22.3 million in 2020. Corradino currently has 736 inmates, with 320 being Maltese and 416 being foreign.

Camilleri also revealed that each inmate costs prison authorities around €100 daily. Total expenditure increase was recorded almost annually over the last ten years, with 2019 registering total expenditure at €18.2 million. This was up from 2018’s €15.2 million. The Minister also revealed that there are currently 100 inmates serving prison sentences over drug offences.

Jon Mallia speaks out on New Zealand’s transgender weightlifting representative

Public figure Jon Mallia took to Facebook to express his concern about New Zealand sending the first transgender weightlifter to compete in the women’s category. Mallia opened his statement by saying that biology is being subjected to ‘fairytale ideology’, despite being a factor that cannot be changed to fit such ideology. Mallia stated that women who have dreamed since birth of competing and reaching the apex of their particular sport are having their dreams ‘spit on’. This is because they are being forced to compete against people who are ‘physically superior’ due to their masculine process of puberty.

Jon continues by stating that this is a clear disadvantage and asks to be illuminated on why in the past there were two separate categories for men and women in the first place. He says that he has heard people say athletic ability far supersedes physical strength. He also asks why in sprinting, the running time for women never reached the same level as that of men.

Jon finished his statement by saying that eventually, a woman having to fight a transgender woman will end up with a ‘wrecked cranium’. He said that the liberal project is cannibalising itself in the same way Maximilien Robespierre, an 18th century French statesman, was executed due to the French Revolution. ‘We lost our way. We’re moving backwards’ ended Jon.

5 COVID-19 cases registered with 1 recovery

Malta has registered 5 new cases of COVID-19 in the past 24 hours from 1,649 swab tests, while 1 patient has recovered. No deaths were registered in the past 24 hours. This information was announced by the official Facebook page of Malta’s Ministry for Health.

As of Tuesday 22nd June 2021, 631,446 vaccine doses were administered of which 353,164 were 1st doses. 290,280 people are currently fully vaccinated.

To date, Malta has registered 30,595 COVID-19 cases in total, of which: 30,148 have recovered, 420 died and 27 are still active.

Italy to set date for dropping of mandatory mask wearing rule

As Italy experiences less infection rates per day, the health authorities of the country are to review the current mask requirements on Monday. Italy has made wearing masks a requirement both indoors and outdoors since October 2020. As the summer heat rolls in however, the mitigation of the health measures will relieve many people as Monday afternoon will see a meeting of the Italian government’s panel of scientific experts. The Scientific Technical Committee (CTS) is holding the meeting to discuss potential changes.

At the moment, the Italian rules require people to wear masks at all times when out of the house, indoors and outdoors. This is exempted when ‘due to the characteristics of the place or circumstances, isolation is continuously guaranteed.’ July 5th is being considered as the possible date for dropping the measure, with experts even considering a date a week earlier. On June 28th, Italy will be under ‘white zone’ rules, meaning that most health measures can be lifted.
