Information tabled in Parliament shows how Malta’s prison expenditure stood at €24 million in 2020. Tabled by Home Affairs Minister Byron Camilleri after a question by Nationalist MP Chris Said, the capital expenditure at the Corradino Correctional Facility (CCF) was unveiled to have stood at €1.7 million and recurrent expenditure at €22.3 million in 2020. Corradino currently has 736 inmates, with 320 being Maltese and 416 being foreign.
Camilleri also revealed that each inmate costs prison authorities around €100 daily. Total expenditure increase was recorded almost annually over the last ten years, with 2019 registering total expenditure at €18.2 million. This was up from 2018’s €15.2 million. The Minister also revealed that there are currently 100 inmates serving prison sentences over drug offences.
