Support was provided by the Occupational Health and Safety Authority, the Police, Transport Malta, LESA, Mater Dei Hospital’s Emergency Department, Enemalta, the Water Services Corporation, the Cleaning and Maintenance Division, the Detention Services Agency and various private contractors.

Following this phase, the BCA will move on to clearing the site and reopening the road to the public. These tasks will be carefully monitored to safeguard nearby properties and ensure public safety, the statement explained.

The BCA is maintaining ongoing communication with residents and business owners who were displaced by the incident. Where possible, arrangements are being made for their return in the coming days.

Meanwhile, a formal investigation into the incident remains in progress. Independent professionals appointed by the BCA are leading this inquiry.

Corradino Prison’s Division 8 To Be Demolished & Rebuilt

Corradino Prison’s Division 8 To Be Demolished & Rebuilt
Jun 15 2025 Share

Division 8 at Corradino Correctional Facility is set for demolition following a tender issued by the Correctional Services Agency.

The €23,045 contract requires demolition within nine weeks, with maintenance for one year afterward. A 5% payment hold will ensure quality, and security measures prevent structures allowing prisoner access to adjacent buildings.

Approved in February 2024, the plan replaces Division 8 with 20 larger cells of 10 square metres each, featuring latrines, showers and sinks. The new four-storey building will include two recreation areas.

Historically, Division 8 was used for solitary confinement but has faced criticism for poor conditions since the 1990s. Despite past promises to close it, poor conditions persisted through 2011, with repeated calls for improvement by European inspectors.

In 2023, reports indicated a temporary closure for renovation, but by 2024 the prison board confirmed demolition, with the new facilities intended for vulnerable inmates and quarantine use during disease outbreaks.
