Contractor denied bail after ‘dumping’ injured migrant in Mellieħa

Contractor Glen Farrugia has been denied bail and charged with the grievous bodily harm of migrant worker Lamin Jaiteh after pleading not guilty to these claims and others in court earlier today.

Migrant construction worker Lamin Jaiteh was abandoned on the side of a Selmun Road in Mellieħa after falling two storeys in a construction site being worked on by Farrugia’s company J&G Contractors Limited. Jaiteh was found injured and in tears, fearing that he will go to prison. The contractor was also charged with tampering of evidence after trying to cover up the incident by removing Jaiteh from the scene on Tuesday.

Farrugia is said to have denied a long list of charges which include breach of employment and health & safety laws, tampering with evidence and more. His defence lawyers Franco Debono and Matthew Xuereb argued the validity of the arrest based on the fact that the claims were made by Jaiteh himself in addition to Farrugia not formally being told he was under arrest.

Ian borg welcomes trees planted in Rabat after public call for greenery

Triq Għeriexem in Rabat will now enjoy a greener facade after a number of trees were planted to complement the newly-erected belvedere in Rabat.

Minister Ian Borg took to Facebook to welcome the newly-planted trees after multiple calls for increased greenery in Rabat and beyond. The post was flooded with comments congratulating the minister for planting the trees, amongst them green activist Cami Applegren who stated that it is “nice to see proper trees and not saplings as well as proper distance between them.”

Minister Borg was recently feature in a locally-developed app ‘The Malta ChIANsaw Massacre, a side-scrolling game where the Minister wields a chainsaw and throws lemons to anyone in his way as he chops down as many trees as possible. Borg was a sport about and may have even taken the game’s message to heart as he welcomes the start of an increase in trees across the Maltese islands.

Contractor Glen Farrugia to face charges over migrant abandoned on side of the road

A contract is set to be charged in court on Thursday after a migrant was seriously injured at his construction job and subsequently left abandoned on the side of the road on Wednesday. When he was found, 32-year-old Jaiteh Lamin was not only crying for his life in fear that he was going to prison, but previously told that he was going to be taken to Mater Dei Hospital.

Reports have emerged that Glen Farrugia of J&G Farrugia contractors will be taken to court and charged for the involvement with the issue in questioned and he was reportedly arraigned at 11am on related charges. Farrugia is being represented by lawyers Franco Debono and Matthew Xuereb.

The case of Jaiteh Lamin took the country by storm and caused national outrage for the lack of humanity in abandoning the worker on the side of the road in Mellieħa.

Farrugia will be appearing before magistrate Nadine Lia.

Malta is getting its first ever film awards in 2022 and we are HYPED!

Malta’s film industry is amongst the country’s most thriving sectors and as the years go by, this 100-year-old industry proves itself time and time again. A key pillar of the industry’s success is The Malta Film Commission, who, this year have announced the island’s first-ever edition of the Malt Film Awards.

In between servicing and local production, Malta’s cinematic history is rich in talent and excellence and the Film Awards are an opportunity to shine a light on the individuals and projects that have taken the film scene by storm and raised the bar for Malta’s media sector. This, in turn, affects the entire industry and continues to test limits and push the envelope of what the local film scene can be.

The Malta Film Awards will be held at Valletta’s Mediterranean Conference Centre in February 2022 and will be broadcast on Television Malta. The event itself is being organised by the Malta Film Commission, the Ministry of Tourism and Consumer Protection with the Malta Tourism Authority and the Public Broadcasting Services. Malta Film Commissioner Johann Grech took the opportunity to encourage local producers and members of the film industry and share his aspirations of continuation in making Malta a ‘world-class film industry’.
