Collapsed traffic lights due to evening rain remain operational

Following massive torrents of evening rain hit several parts of the island, a set of traffic lights collapsed with the green light still remaining operational. The photo was taken by Jonathan Sammut and uploaded to Facebook page ‘Malta Roads Traffic Updates’. It shows a traffic light on its side in the middle of the road, with the page warning drivers to be wary of passing through Vjal ir-Rihan, San Gwann.

The cause of the collapse was questioned by the commentators on the post. Despite the rain and wind being a major culprit, many asked whether infrastructural issues contributed to the collapse. The weather has quickly (and finally?) shifted from scorching heat waves to thunderous showers. Many pointed out whether we’ll be seeing more traffic lights dropping as autumn and winter in Malta progress while others just made light (pun intended) of the situation, with one comment even referencing Squid Game’s ‘Green Light, Red Light’ episode. Jokes aside, we hope no one got injured and we urge everyone to be careful out there!

135,690 COVID-19 vaccines sent to Rwanda from Malta

As Africa continues to experience a significant shortage of vaccine doses and low rates of vaccination, Malta has sent 135,690 doses on their way to Rwanda to help with the situation. Health Minister Chris Fearne posted to his social media, revealing that Malta will be aiding with the fight against the pandemic in countries which have had lower successes in managing the spread. Rwanda is one of the three African countries to have reached the 10% target, despite Africa experiencing massive shortages of jabs between April and June.

With citizens uncertain about their health and safety, the Rwandan government entered bilateral agreements with vaccine manufactures to get more vaccine dose access as well as engaging with COVAX facility. Rwanda has received around 3.4 million doses of the vaccine, with 1.1 million of these from COVAX, 2.1 million from bilateral agreements, and 108,000 from Africa’s CDC’s Africa Vaccine Acquisition Trust.

Maltese film Luzzu lands Oscar nomination for Best International Feature Film

Trail-blazing local film Luzzu has managed to break one record after another and steal local film-lovers hearts but its latest conquest has made Maltese film history. The film, which follows the life of a local fisherman and has been chosen as Malta’s submission for ‘Best International Feature Film’ at the 94th academy awards.

The film illustrates the life of two fisherman and the trials and tribulations of their work and lifestyle, which makes them resort to black market trade to maintain their livelihood. It went on to garner widespread praise and stellar reviews, going on to become the first Maltese film to premiere at the Sundance Festival, with actual fisherman Jesmark Scicluna winning the Special Jury Award for his role.

The movie not only expertly depicts the highs and lows of Maltese culture and celebrates everything that has to do with the Maltese Islands through an artistic depiction unlike any other. The shortlist of finalists will be announced on December 2021 and the final five nominees will be announced on February 8. The Academy Awards themselves will take place on March 27, 2022 in Los Angeles.

Did JD Patrick just reveal Martina’s BIGGEST secret?

Give or take a few anticipated rain showers, today was just a normal Thursday for many. For The Morning Vibe crew over at Vibe FM however all hell broke loose after popular radio personality JD Patrick revealed one of Martina’s biggest secrets.

Most of you will probably know that beyond being a co-host with Jonathan Abel and JD Patrick, Martina Zammit is also at the helm of local brand Gadgets, which has been growing over the past years. Apparently, Gadgets had a big re-brand coming tomorrow and JD spilled the beans before it ever saw the light of day.

“We are revealing something soon, stay tuned”, JD said as he mimicked Gadgets’ social media post, going to jokingly say “as if people care.” The radio host nonchalantly revealed that Gadgets will be re-branding, to which Martina did not approve whatsoever. Jonathan Abel was quick to cut to adverts before Martina showed her disapproval at JD’s apparent leak before she went on to say that she won’t be going on the show anymore.
