Claire Azzopardi with another excellent athletic performance

Athlete Claire Azzopardi has managed to achieve another personal best as she competes in the European Athletics Indoor Championships happening in Torun, Poland with her recent jump of 5.51m. Azzopardi has already achieved title of 2019’s Athlete of the Year after winning the Silver Medal and boasting the national record in the Triple Jump.

Andy Grech, President of Athletics Malta expressed his satisfaction with Azzopardi’s performance as a milestone in Maltese sports in general, with Claire heralding the way forward. Athletic Malta’s schedule of Winter Championships for Under 14 are set to continue today in Marsa, with more athletes competing and travelling to carry the torch forward.

Hugo Chetcuti’s legacy commemorated on his 55th birthday

Today would have been Hugo Chetcuti’s 55th birthday, the entrepreneur owner of various eatery establishments but also a beloved family man. Chetcuti was stabbed on 7th July 2018 by a Serbian man, after having invited some relatives and managers to sample the menu of a new seafood restaurant he was opening.

Luke Chetcuti, Hugo’s son, took to social media to commemorate his late father’s memory, calling him his hero. All Hugo’s establishments also commemorated the pioneer’s memory and his many achievements. Lawyers are still waiting for jury trial in regards to Hugo’s murder as COVID-19 delays further proceedings.

Traffic accident in Mellieha, 19-year-old with grievous injuries

Police were informed of an accident that occurred yesterday 6th March at quarter past ten (22:15) in Louis Wettinger, Mellieha. It was understood from preliminary investigations that a young man of 19-years from Zejtun lost control of his V W Golf  vehicle and ended up on the roundabout.

A first response medical team and ambulance convened on the scene and transported the youth to Mater Dei. He was certified to have experienced grievous injuries. The Civil Protection department also issued members for assistance. Further investigation is currently underway.

Crowds of supporters gather in Hamrun after Spartans win

Numerous groups of supporters have been spotted outside Victor Tedesco stadium following the Hamrun Spartans’ premier league win over Hibernians Football Club.

Police were already stationed in multiple locations in anticipation of these events as crowds such as this had previously gather after recent Hamrun wins despite authorities appeal for caution and social distancing.

Hamrun’s win today puts them 5 points ahead of Hibernians F.C. and secures them a safe place at the top of the table but sparks concerns about the events’ potential contribution to the rapid increase of COVID-19 cases in Malta.
