Outrage as Care Home Residents Given Three Months to Vacate

Outrage as Care Home Residents Given Three Months to Vacate

Relatives of elderly residents at the Apap Institute in Santa Venera have expressed frustration and concern after being informed that the care home will close by the end of the year, Times of Malta reports. The Curia, which operates the home, cited ageing nuns and high refurbishment costs as reasons for the closure. The home, which accommodates 30 residents, is managed by five elderly nuns alongside 13 care staff. Relatives were notified this week and given three months to find alternative accommodation for their loved ones.

Liliana, whose mother has lived at the home for 12 years, told Times of Malta she hasn’t yet broken the news to her mother, fearing it would cause too much distress. Many relatives criticized the short notice, saying it is insufficient time to relocate elderly residents who have strong bonds with staff and other residents. They also claimed that the promised assistance with relocation has not been provided, leaving families anxious about the future.

A Curia spokesperson clarified that the Archdiocese is working with government authorities to find alternatives for those who cannot be accommodated elsewhere. The future of the Apap Institute building will be assessed to determine its potential benefit to the community.
