Maltese Leaders Honour Francis Zammit Dimech with Heartfelt Tributes

Apr 21 2025 Share

Politician Francis Zammit Dimech has sadly passed away at the age of 70 after a battle with illness.

His passing was announced by Opposition Leader Bernard Grech, who remembered him as a true gentleman who devoted decades of service to both the Nationalist Party and the country.

“Francis served with steadfast loyalty in every position he held,” Grech said.

“He overcame every obstacle, defused tensions with ease, and met adversity with a smile. He was always ready to help or offer advice, but never intervened unless asked.”

European Parliament President Roberta Metsola also paid a heartfelt tribute, expressing her deep gratitude for his support throughout her career—particularly 25 years ago when she ran in her first European election. She said words could never fully capture her appreciation.

Prime Minister Robert Abela described Francis as a kind and respectful politician, noting that although he was a strong debater, he always remained courteous. Meanwhile, President Myriam Spiteri Debono thanked him for a lifetime of service to the Maltese public, even during difficult times such as her tenure as Acting President.

Speaker of the House Anġlu Farrugia also issued a statement, expressing profound sorrow at Zammit Dimech’s passing and noting that his decades of public service—both in Parliament and in Government—were marked by integrity and a steadfast commitment to Malta’s democracy.
