Deputy Prime Minister and Labour Minister Chris Fearne has stepped down from his positions in the Cabinet following the filing of criminal charges related to the contentious Vitals privatisation of state hospitals, which has sparked significant controversy within the Labour administration.
Fearne, who currently serves as the deputy leader for parliamentary affairs within the Labour Party, announced his resignation as Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Reforms. He has also withdrawn his nomination for European Commissioner.
His decision comes amidst the ongoing magisterial inquiry into the Vitals-Steward deal, with Fearne stating that he wishes to focus on addressing the charges he is set to face. Additionally, he has requested that the Maltese government retract his nomination as Malta’s next European Commissioner.
