Chris Fearne announces more easing of measures in coming days

Deputy Prime Minister and Health Minister Chris Fearne has announced whilst speaking during a press conference from Mount Carmel that the government plans to announce more measurement easing in the coming days. Ahead of the new ward opening on Wednesday, Fearne stated that despite no details can be given as of yet, there will be further easing due to the drop in daily and active cases.

Restaurants and cafes are set to reopen until 5pm with bars and clubs remaining shut. Access to Gozo will not be restricted, along with the resuming of non-contact sports. Mask wearing is set to remain a health measure for a while as Fearne stated that health authorities are being eased due to social distancing and masks still being in place.

Amazon hoping that pandemic shopping habits stick due to profits tripling

The COVID-19 pandemic has not been bad news for Amazon as it hopes that the shopping habits that developed throughout the course of the first three months of this year led to a tripling in their profits. COVID-19 led to the company’s revenues to boost and it expects this to continue for the upcoming months. The company’s revenue rose from $75bn to a whopping $108.5bn for the first three months of 2021.

Amazon has spread its versatility into automated grocery shopping, online healthcare services and even a bricks-and-mortar hair and beauty salon in London. But the core offerings such as online shopping and media streaming all received a massive boost, unlike many other businesses struggling during the pandemic.

Mexico City metro overpass collapse leaves at least 20 dead

A Mexico City metro overpass partially collapsed last Monday leading to a rescue operation initiating on the scene. Civil Protection Authorities in Mexico stated that at least people were killed in the accident, with around 70 found injured. Videos circulating showed train cars hanging mid-air in terrifying footage, with some footage also showing the overpass collapsing onto cars driving below. Mayor Claudia Sheinbaum stated on Twitter that a support beam had given way and thus caused the collapse.

She also revealed that 34 people were sent to hospitals as firefighters and public safety are working hard to maintain the situation. At least one train car was trapped under rubble with workers searching for survivors.

23,627 Gozitans received their vaccine

Minister for Gozo Clint Camilleri revealed when answering a parliamentary question that around 23,627 Gozitans have received their vaccine. 12,293 of these were vaccinated in the Gozo Conference and Expo Centre in Rabat. The Minister also revealed why the centre was chosen as the optimal place for vaccine administration.

He stated that the centre’s overall size allowed several people to be able to receive the vaccine at a go. Camilleri also said that the centre required minimal work to transform into a vaccination centre, and that its position in the centre of Gozo provided a strategic advantage along with enough parking space. Malta has so far administered 346,951 vaccines, of which 109,933 are second doses.
