Chinese Retailer Introduces 10 Days Of 'Unhappy Leave'
Nov 22 2024 Share

In a move to enhance workplace well-being, Yu Donglai, founder and CEO of Chinese retail chain Pang Dong Lai, has introduced an innovative “unhappy leave” policy.

Under this initiative, employees can take up to 10 additional days off each year when they are feeling emotionally low. This time off is paid and cannot be denied by management.

The policy is part of a broader effort to promote work-life balance, which also includes shorter workdays, weekends off, and extended holiday periods like a 30-40 day leave for Lunar New Year celebrations.

These benefits come at a time when workplace stress is a growing concern in China, particularly among younger workers aged 18 to 25, who face rising unemployment and the high cost of living.

Yu Donglai’s approach has sparked significant online discussion, with many praising the progressive stance on employee well-being.

By prioritizing mental health, Pang Dong Lai not only encourages a supportive workplace culture but also sets an example for other businesses aiming to create healthier environments for their workforce.
