Children, who may be carrying and asymptomatic, may be transmitting the virus unknowingly. With over one in 10 current cases are children, schools are prompted to hold out as they monitor the situation more closely. The 11-17 age group seems to have the highest number. 83 children up to five years, 85 between 6 and 10, and 175 between 11-17 make up the active cases, as pointed out by Superintendent of Public Health, Charmaine Gauci, during an exclusive interview with Times of Malta.

The percentage jumped from less than 5% in September to the current 12%. This has forced schools to monitor the situation more closely, as Sue Midolo, president of Independent Schools Association, pointed out that decisions catered per school will be taken.

Fathers can stay near mother during childbirth

Mar 10 2021 Share

Speaking during TVAM, head of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at Mater Dei Professor Yves Muscat Baron stated that the father can be near the mother during childbirth. Evening visits are also open for an hour. Baron reminded the public of last April with 50 cases active which lead to hospital visits being temporarily banned and fathers allowed only ten minutes to be present. Since cases seem to be increasing, along with the variant, the situation needs to be approached realistically.

Baron continued that the father can stay during the whole birthing process and then accompany the mother to her ward, after which he must leave. With opening hours being between 4pm and 6pm, the father is allowed an hour to stay. Due to the variant’s quicker spreading, no chances are to be taken.
