Children crying out for fewer buildings and more trees

A Malta Foundation for the Wellbeing of Society (MFWS) survey has concluded that 61% of children are discontent with the lack of recreational space and open greenery spaces. The survey interviewed 142 children and showed that the kids were ‘crying out for fewer buildings and more trees.’

The survey was part of the foundation’s initiative titled Progett KommunitArja, a two-year consultation process involving around 900 children to gather information of how kids view the environmental and recreational situation Malta finds itself in. A 16-year-old representative named Martina Oliva stated that the study strengthened the need to improve approaches towards including green, safe recreational spaces in all localities.

Active COVID-19 cases expected to drop below 1,000 in today’s case report

The total amount of COVID-19 cases in Malta is expected to drop below 1,000 cases in today’s daily case report published by the Health Ministry.

This would be the first time that Malta has had a three-digit total case number since October 14th 2020 and may have been a result of the recently-imposed partial lockdown.

The health authorities will reportedly impose new changes to the health measures on April 11th and will hopefully pave the way towards the economy and health system’s bounce back during the summer.

‘A health crisis is not a matter of if, but when’ say World Leaders

As COVID-19 continues to run rampant globally, world leaders have called for international pandemic treaty. UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson has joined more than 20 world leaders in calling for a new global settlement to help the world prepare for future pandemics. President Macron of France and German chancellor Angela Merkel also stated COVID-19 posed the biggest challenge since World War II, and another pandemic is not a matter of if but of when.

The aim of coming together in this way is to foster communication and aid between countries, to dispel ‘temptations of isolationism and nationalism’, and address challenges that could only be achieved together in the ‘spirit of solidarity and cooperation.’

Keith Schembri denied bail and to remain in jail

Former OPM chief of staff Keith Schembri’s bail requests were denied on charges pertaining to corruption, money laundering and criminal conspiracy. Kasco CEO Malcolm Scerri and accountant Robert Zammit will also not get bail but Alfio Schembri, Keith’s father, has been granted bail against a €20,000 deposit and €50,000 guarantee. Having been arrested on Saturday 20th March, the group have been at Corradino during the process.

The court heard how the police analysed 44 transactions out of a BTI account owned by Brian Tonna between 2015 and 2016 which totalled around €600,000. Magistrate Donatella Frendo Dimech decreed this statement this morning.
