Patients Benefiting From Advances In Vascular Surgery

Apr 16 2025 Share

Minister for Health and Active Ageing, Jo Etienne Abela, in a press release empahsised the progress being made in the field of vascular surgery.

Minister Abela highlighted that recent advancements and the introduction of innovative practices have enabled personalised  procedures in vascular surgery, benefiting over 500 patients. The Minister added that the ongoing investment remains a key focus of the government’s healthcare strategies.

The Minister highlighted that screening for men aged 65 has been ongoing for the past two and a half years. This screening helps identify diseases at an early stage, allowing for treatment that can save patients’ lives.

Professor Kevin Cassar, Lead Clinician in the field, explained the importance of screening for aortic aneurysms. When diagnosed early through ultrasound, further examination using a CT scan provides a detailed map of the arteries, leading to customized EVAR (Endovascular Aneurysm Repair) and TVAR (Thoracic Endovascular Aortic Repair) procedures.

Minister Abela further explained that in the past, such interventions required major surgery involving opening the abdomen to replace the artery. Thanks to recent health sector advancements, these procedures are now performed through a small incision in the groin, where a stent-like device is inserted to treat the condition and eliminate the risk of artery rupture and death. “With the current technology and procedures, treatment is not only effective, but in the vast majority of cases, patients return home quickly,” stated Minister Abela.
