Cheryl Cole has spoken out following the heartbreaking death of her former partner, Liam Payne. In an emotional statement on Friday, she urged the public and media to approach the coverage of Payne’s passing with sensitivity and respect.
Cole, who shares a son, Bear, with Payne from their relationship between 2016 and 2018, expressed her deep grief and concern for their son’s future. “As I try to navigate this earth-shattering event and work through my own grief at this indescribably painful time, I’d like to kindly remind everyone that we have lost a human being,” she wrote, sharing a touching photo of Liam and Bear. She emphasised that Payne was much more than a pop star—he was “a son, a brother, an uncle, a dear friend, and a father.”
Cole, who co-parented Bear with Payne, is deeply worried about the impact that media reports might have on their son as he grows older. “It is breaking my heart further that I cannot protect him from that,” she added.
Payne tragically passed away on Wednesday after a fall from a hotel in Buenos Aires. Authorities are still investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident. Cole concluded by pleading for compassion, asking for Payne to be allowed dignity and peace in his final rest.
