Charmaine Gauci Reveals that 80 People Died Due To Heat Waves In 2023

Superintendent of Public Health Charmaine Gauci has warned the Maltese public of the dangers heat waves can have on a person’s health, even revealing the number of casualties related to heat waves which occurred in 2023.

Charmaine Gauci revealed on Saturday that last year’s heatwave in Malta resulted in 80 ‘excess deaths.’ She urged everyone to look out for vulnerable and elderly individuals as temperatures are set to rise in the coming days.

The term ‘Excess deaths’ refer to the number of deaths from all causes during a crisis that exceed what would normally be expected under typical conditions. Notably, no heatwave was recorded from July 24 onwards in 2023.

The Superintendent of Public Health, Charmaine Gauci, responded to questions from Andrew Azzopardi on RTK103 just hours after the Meteorological Office issued a warning about rising temperatures.

This weekend, temperatures are expected to reach 35°C, climbing to 36°C by Tuesday. Throughout the weekend, the temperature is predicted to feel like 38°C, with the heat-stress index expected to reach 41°C by Tuesday.

Prof.Gauci revealed to Andrew Azzopardi that during that same week (week 30 of 2023), 44% of the deaths happened at private residences, meaning the people passed away before medical personnel could help treat them.

1st Day Of Oħloq Tbissima A Success: Marathon To Continue Over Weekend

Fr. Louis Mallia MSSP inaugurated the 22nd edition of the Oħloq Tbissima broadcast marathon.

Oħloq Tbissima paused at midnight but will resume on Saturday, July 13, and Sunday, July 14, from 4:00 pm to midnight each day. The marathon will be broadcast at various times on TVM, NET, ONE, and F Living.

For 22 years, Oħloq Tbissima has supported Maltese missionaries who have been working for many years with poor families in Peru, Pakistan, and the Philippines.

Without these brave priests, it would be very difficult for these families to live with dignity, access medical care, send their children to school, or have at least one meal a day.

Each country they help has its own challenges, needs, and stories. For example, in Peru, many families, due to a lack of jobs, have to move from one city to another, from rural mountain areas to cities, in search of work. Often, they don’t even have a room to live in, literally leaving with just the clothes on their backs.

They have to start from scratch. Easy? Certainly not, and this is where the missionaries come in to help them start building a new life and livelihood.

Additionally, for the past 25 years, Fr. Joe Cremona MSSP has helped numerous families in Bataan, a village about three hours from Manila. This poor village has seen Fr. Joe working tirelessly to assist the poor not only in finding jobs but also in providing social, psychological, and moral support.

Fr. Joe also established a youth orchestra, which today receives professional musical training and has had success in their music exams, aiding them in continuing their studies at university.

All of this is possible thanks to the donations made by the generous people of Malta and Gozo during the Oħloq Tbissima marathon. Maltese and Gozitans recognize the need to help people far from them but who remain close to their hearts.

Adorable Girl Joins In On Fgura Band With Mini Drums

A video uploaded by Maria Seychell on Facebook shows an adorable little girl with her mini drums joining the Fgura festa band as it marched throughout the locality.

The girl was seemingly very impressed by the musical talent of her fellow band members and she was quite eager to kick off her musical career.

Who knows, maybe we’ll see her play alongside them professionally one day!
