Chadwick Lakes passage collapses due to heavy rain

Nov 1 2021 Share

As Malta continued to be battered by heavy rainfall, part of a road running through Chadwick Lakes collapsed overnight. The Mtarfa Local council warned motorists on Monday morning, but thankfully so far, no injuries related to the collapse were reported. An update also confirmed that the relevant authorities closed off said road, after the local council issued a warning to avoid driving through the area.

The reason for the collapse has not yet been confirmed, but it is suspected that the continuous downfall of rain contributed to the damage. With the meteorological office even reported how the just recently ended month of October registered more rainfall than the previous 9 months of the year, the area which collapsed reportedly did not experience work when compared to other areas.

Posting to social media, Environment Minister Aaron Farrugia described Malta’s COP26 climate change plan as a strong and assertive approach. Leaders are currently gathering in Glasgow for the conference, and the Minister has expressed on a TVAM interview that the plan is one which Malta has already started to implement. Farrugia said that Malta’s message will be that ‘just as Malta respected the Paris Agreement, we expect all other signatories to do likewise.’ The conference will be taking place in the context of an international report calling a code red for humanity, warning that climate change has made many global changes irreversible.

Farrugia said that Malta is going in with this ambitious mindset, knowing full well that other countries too will be taking on this same mind-space. Whether the results are optimistic will depend on the negotiations. Farrugia highlighted the main goals of COP26 as being ensuring every country reaching emission reduction targets for 2030 and 2050, making sure people are able to adapt to lifestyle changes, mobilizing international finance to help companies change business models and even foster a sense of global collaboration.

Over 50,000 booster doses administered reveals Prime Minister

Over 50,000 booster doses administered reveals Prime Minister
Nov 1 2021 Share

Speaking during an interview, Prime Minister Robert Abela unveiled that around 50,000 doses of the COVID-19 booster dose have been administered. The Prime Minister expressed a cautious optimism, saying that the key out of the pandemic and towards normality is the vaccine. By extension, accepting the booster invitation when one receives it will help the rollout and this gradual move to normality.

Abela said that if people do not receive the vaccine, Malta will end up experiencing what other countries around the world are going through. A few weeks ago, Deputy Prime Minister Chris Fearne announced his two step plan to ensure we have a normal festive winter – the removal of social distancing rules for establishments and rules to standing by mid-November. However, these all depend on the epidemiological situation, with the vaccine being the main ingredient contributing to the move towards such a social state.
