New Mosque & Housing Proposed For Ta’ Giorni Libyan School

New Mosque & Housing Proposed For Ta' Giorni Libyan School
Nov 8 2024 Share

The Libyan Higher Vocational Institute in Ta’ Giorni, Malta, has proposed the construction of a two-storey mosque with a turret and a five-storey residential block with 40 apartments on its ground, MaltaToday reported.

The Libyan government has owned the site since purchasing it in 1976, and a 2013 agreement with the Maltese government allowed the institute to admit international students, backed by a €22.4 million investment commitment.

The residential block, planned for a 1,017 sq.m. section of the school grounds, will require the removal of eight carob trees, while the mosque, covering 423 sq.m., will not impact existing trees.

A third planning application seeks to convert the existing school from a boarding facility to a non-residential educational institution. These three applications have all been submitted by the Libyan Higher Vocational Institute.

Malta currently has one mosque in Paola, inaugurated by Muammar Gaddafi in 1978, but the demand for a second mosque has grown due to an increasing Muslim population.

Another mosque project has been pending for years on a government-provided plot in Luqa’s industrial estate, meant as a permanent location for the Islamic community’s worship needs.

3 People Charged In Connection With Liam Payne’s Death

3 People Charged In Connection With Liam Payne’s Death
Nov 8 2024 Share

Three individuals have been charged in Argentina in connection with the death of former One Direction member Liam Payne, who died after a fall from his hotel balcony in Buenos Aires.

Prosecutor Andrés Madrea charged the suspects with “abandonment of a person followed by death” and “supplying and facilitating narcotics.”

They are barred from leaving the country. Payne fell from the third-floor balcony of a hotel in Palermo, sustaining fatal injuries, and an autopsy confirmed multiple injuries with no signs of self-harm or physical intervention.

Toxicology reports indicated traces of alcohol, cocaine, and an antidepressant in Payne’s system at the time of his death.

Although investigators initially believed Payne was alone, new findings suggest that one of the accused was frequently with him, a second suspect—a hotel employee—allegedly provided him with cocaine, and the third is a known drug dealer.

Argentine authorities are examining Payne’s phone records and other digital evidence. His laptop, still locked, might provide further insights.

Prosecutors have ruled out suicide, noting Payne appeared unconscious during the fall. Payne had visited Argentina to support his former bandmate Niall Horan at a concert but remained in the country after his girlfriend left.
