Cassola files complaint over lack of air time for non-major party candidates

Independent candidate Arnold Cassola filed a complaint with the Chairperson of the Broadcasting Authority, arguing that non-major party candidates are not getting airtime on ONE and NET television.

Cassola said that it is the Broadcasting Authority’s duty to ensure that there is access to all candidates on these stations during an election campaign. ‘The BA cannot abdicate from this responsibility’ stated Cassola, urging the authority to invite him and other candidates to debates with the PN and PL candidates as soon as possible.

Protest items outside Russian Embassy repositioned for safety

Police have stated that protest symbols left outside the Russian Embassy in Kappara following a peaceful Friday protest were ‘repositioned in the same area for safety reasons.’

A man who filmed the police said they were ‘tearing down’ the symbols soon after the protest ended on Friday evening. In the footage, the man was heard telling police that people put them there for a reason. ‘Why would you do this’ he asked.

A spokesperson for the police has since insisted that none of the items were cleared, instead being repositioned in the same area for safety reasons.

In a letter addressed to the Russian ambassador Andrey Lopukhov, the protesters said that they know ‘that this aggression is the result of the intentions and actions of cruel and ambitious leaders and not of a whole people that has nothing to do with this violence.’

‘Despite what their leaders have done, we feel no hatred whatsoever towards any Russian, including those who, like you, have made their home temporarily or permanently among us’ they stated.

Kharkiv, Ukraine: 21 dead and military hospital shelled overnight

As the invasion of Ukraine by Russia continues, it was revealed that on the evening of 1st of March, fighting erupted in Kharkiv as Putin’s forces attacked a military hospital.

According to local reports, an airborne assault was launched on the hospital overnight, with heavy fighting still heard in the area after dawn.

At least 21 people have been killed and another 112 wounded in the shelling of Ukraine’s second biggest city. Just yesterday, rockets and missiles hit the open house, concert hall and government offices in the city’s Freedom Square as well.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy described it as terror against Ukraine. ‘There were no military targets in the square – nor are they in those residential districts of Kharkiv which come under rocket artillery fire.’

The city’s governor, Oleh Synyehubov, revealed that the Russian enemy also suffered significant losses. It is unclear whether there’s been any civilian casualties as a result of Russian paratroopers launching the airborne assault.

The situation has been placed back under Ukrainian control, region police chief revealed. However, another missile strike in the city of Zhytomyr killed two people as it hit residential areas despite being believed to have been aimed at an airbase.

The UN estimated that at least 136 civilians have been killed and 400 injured as a result of the conflict. The death toll could be much higher, with figures released by the Ukrainian government stating that as many as 352 civilians may have been killed.

Man to be charged with murder of Rita Ellul

A man, reportedly of Ghanian nationality, was arrested and is set to be charged with homicide in the Gozo courts.

The victim was a 47-year-old woman from Iklin, Rita Ellul, who was found dead inside a residence on Triq Dun Franġisk Mizzi in Għajnsielem, Gozo.

The homicide was said to have occurred on Saturday, 26th of February, at 12pm, with police finding the woman dead inside the Gozo residence when convening on the scene. The man will be charged at 1:30pm before Magistrate Bridgette Sultana.
