9 Hour Public Swim With Neil Aigus Ahead Of Record Attempt

9 Hour Public Swim With Neil Aigus Ahead Of Record Attempt
Aug 21 2024 Share

Ultra-endurance athlete and clean seas activist Neil Agius will host a nine-hour public swim on August 31, 2024, at the National Pool Complex in Tal-Qroqq, Malta.

The event, part of his training for a world record open water sea challenge, invites swimmers of all levels to participate.

Organized with SportMalta, the session aims to foster community spirit, promote physical activity, and raise awareness about ocean health. Agius views this event as more than just training; it’s about inspiring people to embrace the ocean and contribute to a cleaner environment.

The public swim will feature timed lanes for various skill levels, and proceeds will support community clean-ups tied to Agius’ upcoming 160km swim around the Maltese archipelago in September.

This challenge will take three days and 175,000 strokes to complete, potentially breaking Agius’ own world record for the longest non-stop, unassisted sea swim. Last year, a similar attempt in Spain was thwarted by a swarm of jellyfish.

NGO Wave of Change, founded by Agius, will collaborate with Żibel to coordinate coastal clean-ups and manage marine litter. Agius’ intensive training for the challenge includes 10-hour swims in summer heat, supported by a team of 25 professionals and volunteers.

Rare Blind Shrimp Found Only In St Julian’s Cave

Rare Blind Shrimp Found Only In St Julian's Cave
Aug 21 2024 Share

A rare type of blind shrimp has been discovered in Malta’s only fully-submerged terrestrial cave. Known as the Ħarq il-Ħammiem cave-amphipod, this shrimp is unique to the cave in St Julian’s. which has three different kinds of water: freshwater at the top, brackish in the middle, and seawater at the bottom.

A group of scientists led by Italian scholars Sabrina Lo Brutto and Davide Iaciofano, naturalist Arnold Sciberras, marine biologist Alan Deidun, and fieldwork specialists Jeffrey and Justin Sciberras made the discovery. Ten specimens in all were gathered by them: two damaged, seven slightly smaller females, and one male measuring 1.6 cm.

Sadly, there’s a threat to the cave. Over the years, construction and roadworks have severely harmed it, and current events have made matters worse. This endangers the cave’s survival as well as that of its unique prawns.
