Can You Imagine The Coast Road Without Magħtab?

Can You Imagine The Coast Road Without Magħtab?
Nov 23 2023 Share

During an episode on waste and waste management, Popolin posed the question: do you remember – or better yet, can you imagine – the Coast Road without the Magħtab junkyard?

Malta’s waste problem goes back decades, with old footage presented by Popolin showing youth in 1967 handing out fliers to raise awareness about waste management.

The feature explains how Malta had multiple sites wherein waste would be relegated to, including Żurrieq’s Wied Fulija, il-Qortin in Gozo and, of course, Magħtab.

Many of the zones, like Wied Fulija, were transformed into parks for families, whereas Magħtab was closed off in 2004, with the government making use of other areas in the vicinity to manage waste in a more engineered way.

Borg shared the video, writing: a bit of rain and you don’t expect these scenes after an investment of €700 million into infrastructure. All this after a summer of work’.

The PN MP said that this shows a clear lack of planning on behalf of the relevant authorities. This comes as other videos and images show further flooding across Malta due to a storm which has been anticipated for days this week.

Petition To Revoke Ġgantija Temples Permit Almost At 2,500 Goal

Petition To Revoke Ġgantija Temples Permit Almost At 2,500 Goal
Nov 22 2023 Share

In less than a week, a petition which calls for the revocation of a permit for an apartment block mere metres away from the Ġgantija temples, is close to reach the 2,500 goal.

With almost 2,400 goals as of time of writing, the petition asks the Planning Authority to revoke the permit approved on the 9th of November 2023.

‘With seven votes against one, the Planning Authority approved a 22-apartment block of flats and 20 basement garages near the historic temple site, despite UNESCO mandating that a heritage impact assessment is required for any developments within buffer zones.’

‘Ġgantija Archaeological Park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site consisting of two structures built over 5,000 years ago, between c.3600 and c.3200 BCE, about 1000 years before the magnificent pyramids of Egypt.’

The permit immediately drew controversy, with many groups and activists calling for the revocation and UNESCO also warning against such a development.
