Following a Cabinet meeting held today, the Government reaffirmed its full confidence in Minister for Home Affairs, Security, and Employment, Byron Camilleri, after Prime Minister Robert Abela declined his resignation offer.

In an official statement, the Cabinet described Minister Camilleri’s offer to step down as a demonstration of accountability. However, they expressed their trust in his integrity and commitment, highlighting his track record in overseeing key reforms and investments in the country’s disciplined forces, addressing irregular migration, and strengthening the fight against crime.

The statement emphasized that the Government’s priority remains ensuring that all necessary efforts and resources are deployed so that the Police Force can swiftly resolve the case in question, hold those responsible accountable, and uncover the full truth.

Additionally, the Government is awaiting the conclusions of the administrative inquiry to establish the facts surrounding the case and implement any recommendations arising from the final report.

In light of ongoing investigations, the Government urged caution and responsibility, calling for restraint in any actions or statements that could potentially interfere with the legal process.

While the statement did not delve into specifics regarding the case at the centre of this decision, it is evident that the Government is standing firmly behind Minister Camilleri.

The outcome of the administrative inquiry and the progress of police investigations will likely shape further developments in this matter.

During a site visit to the ongoing works, the Minister for the Environment, Energy and Public Cleanliness, Miriam Dalli, commented, “Our goal is to continue modernising the energy network and to be prepared for any eventuality while fostering efficiency and sustainability.”

An additional two kilometres of underground cables were installed to improve connectivity, resilience, and flexibility within the distribution system.

As part of this reinforcement, substations in the area were upgraded with new switchgear, further enhancing the reliability of the system.

These improvements have contributed to consolidating a stronger resilience framework, ensuring that in the event of a fault, Enemalta customers could quickly be switched to alternative circuits, minimising downtime as much as possible.

“The Government is committed to expanding our energy infrastructure to provide a more reliable, high-quality service for families and businesses. The benefits of this work will not only be felt in the locality where it was carried out but also in the surrounding areas,” stated Minister Dalli.

Enemalta’s Executive Chairman, Eng. Ryan Fava, provided a detailed explanation of how these works would improve electricity services. He also highlighted that reinforcement works were ongoing in other localities, with 30 kilometres of new underground cables already installed across various areas.

This project, carried out in collaboration with Infrastructure Malta and Transport Malta, forms part of Enemalta’s commitment to laying 60 kilometres of new underground cables across 21 localities in Malta and Gozo. Currently, works are in progress in 15 different localities, with several projects already nearing completion.

Roughly 6 People Arrested Over 200kg Army Facility Drug Theft

Roughly 6 People Arrested Over 200kg Army Facility Drug Theft

Authorities have made arrests following the daring theft of 200kg of cannabis resin from a secured container within the Armed Forces of Malta (AFM) facility at Safi barracks.

Home Affairs Minister Byron Camilleri confirmed that several individuals are in police custody and that a portion of the stolen drugs has been recovered.

Speaking to journalists after a cabinet meeting on Tuesday, he did not specify the exact number of arrests. However, Times of Malta sources indicated that around six suspects have been detained.

The stolen cannabis resin had been stored in a sealed container at Safi barracks under the custody of the Court Services Agency. The drugs were part of a larger shipment seized at the Malta Freeport in June.

The theft occurred overnight between Saturday and Sunday and was only discovered during a routine patrol. Times of Malta sources revealed that the perpetrators gained access by cutting through a fence.

Lawyer Jason Azzopardi alleged that the culprits loaded the drugs into sacks and escaped in a Skoda via a back lane, though police have not confirmed these claims.

The revelation of the heist on Sunday sent shockwaves through the government and AFM, prompting significant political fallout. AFM Commander Clinton O’Neill was suspended, and Minister Camilleri offered his resignation, though Prime Minister Robert Abela rejected it.

The theft has led to two separate inquiries—one by Magistrate Antoine Agius Bonnici and another by retired judge Geoffrey Valenzia, who will investigate potential security lapses that enabled the heist.

PN Vows To Continue Fight Against Drugs

PN Vows To Continue Fight Against Drugs

The Partit Nazzjonalista (PN) has accused Prime Minister Robert Abela of abandoning the fight against drugs, leaving 200kg of stolen drugs circulating on the streets.

PN leader Bernard Grech criticised Abela for his indifference to families affected by drug addiction, including parents who have lost children to substance abuse.

The PN claims Abela is more concerned with protecting his inner circle than addressing national issues.

They also condemned Home Affairs Minister Byron Camilleri, arguing that his resignation should be accepted due to multiple failures under his leadership.

The PN insists that if Abela does not accept Camilleri’s resignation, he is personally assuming responsibility for these failures.

Grech also criticised Abela for hypocrisy, noting that despite attending Dun Victor Grech’s funeral—a priest known for his work with drug victims—Abela refuses to act decisively on the issue.

The PN pledged to remain the people’s “only shield” in the fight against drugs and national security, accusing Abela of prioritising his own interests over the country’s well-being.
