Byron Camilleri sates nations should not suffer in immigration due to geography

Minister for Home Affairs, National Security and Law Enforcement Byron Camilleri stated during the end of a meeting in Greece that Malta, among other countries, should not suffer in terms of immigration due to its geographical position. The meeting occurred between ministers from Malta, Greece, Italy, Spain and Cyprus, in which they discussed the immigration situation of said countries.

During the concluding statements, the ministers asked for more cooperation with African, Near Eastern and Asiatic countries. They asked for the UE countries to accept more immigrants and a central mechanism for repatriation. Alongside the five ministers was Vice-President of European Commission Margaritis Schinas, who coordinates the work in this sector.

Asked about the COVID-19 situation in Malta, Robert Abela claimed that Malta got more vaccines than it should have thanks to the intense negotiations by the government. It did so without breaking any regulations and by heavily spending on obtaining extra vaccines due to the high demand as Malta continues its vaccination quest.

The Prime Minister also stated that the vaccination plan is moving as planned, with the all of over 80-year-olds having received vaccination. Malta is also set to receive a substantial number of Johnson and Johnson vaccines, with the new measures put in place seemingly reducing the virus’ reproduction rate efficiently.

Robert Abela says there is no database against him and institutions are working

When asked about the the current judicial situation concerning Keith Schembri, Prime Minister Robert Abela states that he is not afraid of taking the right decisions against anyone. He claims that he is sure there is no ‘database’ of information against him and thus can take any decision with serenity and without fear of information used against him.

When asked about the institution’s efficacy, Abela claimed he has full trust in their capability as they are operating successfully. He expressed that this message is a consistent one in the last few months as the government expressed a strong will to maintain the standard and importance of rights, thus strengthening institutions, including FIAU and Police Corps.

COVID-19 Reproduction rate decreases with new measures

Statistician Vincent Marmara informed The Malta Independent that the COVID-19 reproduction rate – a.k.a the r-factor – has gone down to 1.1 from 1.4 last week. Signifying the efficiency of the new measures, the reproduction number of COVID-19 in Malta seems to be dropping as countries across the world work to do the same. Reducing the factor to level 1 would mean that a carrier would only transmit the virus to one other person.

With a decrease in cases, lower than registered last week, the desired effect of the new implemented measures seems to be at work. There have been 16% more recoveries than new cases over the past week with more swab tests performed. 9% of the population is now fully vaccinated, with 20% having received one dose.
