Bust honouring Puttinu founder Victor Calvagna inaugurated in Qawra

The bust of Puttinu Cares founder Dr Victor Calvagna was erected and inaugurated in Qawra by sculptor Indri Attard and Victor Galea. 

The first images of the bust were shared on Puttinu Cares’ social media, with the NGO thanking the St Paul’s Bay local council for the wonderful initiative. Apart from thanking the creators themselves, Puttinu also thanked the athletes who participated in the marathon run and for making this a memorable landmark for the beloved doctor.

Calvagna was a renowned doctor in Malta, founding the main organisation which helps many, most prominently children, as they battled cancer. The doctor unfortunately passed earlier this year following a road accident. His memory lived on in the large amount of good Puttinu Cares is doing and all those who were healed from the disease under his watch.

The European Union has officially agreed to give war-torn Ukraine a candidature for EU membership in a historic day for the country.

The EU has accepted both Ukraine and Moldova as candidates for the union. Ukraine applied for EU membership on 27th February, less than a week after Russia launched its invasion. 

The journey to actual membership is a long one and can take years to join. This could be the first step for Ukraine, but applicants aren’t always guaranteed success in this endeavour. Countries must meet detailed political and economic conditions as well as commitments to rule of law. 

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy tweeted out ‘sincerely commend[ing] EU leaders’ decision at EUCO to grant Ukraine a candidate status. It’s a unique and historical moment in Ukraine-EU relations.’ 

EP President Roberta Metsola also tweeted out saying ‘On the right side of history. Congratulations to the people of Ukraine and Moldova. Today we gave hope. For freedom, for democracy, for our future.’

€10,000 to five football teams competing in UEFA competition by VisitMalta

VisitMalta will be sponsoring five Maltese Football clubs playing in the UEFA European competitions which are due in the coming months, with a total of €10,000 handed to each club. 

Hibernians, Floriana, Hamrun Spartans and Gzira United as well as the women’s team of Birkirkara FC are the clubs in question as they were last seasons league winners.

The VisitMalta logo will be placed on the back of the kit shirts of each of the clubs as they travel to play against foreign talent in the UEFA Champions League, UEFA Europa League, UEFA Conference League and UEFA Women’s Champions League. 

Floriana will be taking on Petroclub Hincesti in Moldova as Hibernians fly to Ireland to play against Shamrock Rovers. Meanwhile, Hamrun Spartans will play against Alashkert in Armenia as Gzira take on Atletic Club D’Escaldes in Andorra. The Birkirkara’s Women team is yet to have an opponent drawn. 

Tourism Minister Clayton Bartolo, alongside Malta Tourism Authority CEO Carlo Micallef and Malta Football Association President Bjorn Vassallo, announced the financial aid in a press conference. The Minister said that he was pleased to see that the clubs will not only be waving the club flags but also the Maltese flag on foreign soil.

Parliamentary Secretary for Local Government Alison Zerafa Civelli took to social media to reveal that, along with her office mates, she celebrated international ‘Take Your Dog to Work Day.’

Any of the office workers who had a four-legged furry friend were given the opportunity to take their companions with them to work. 

‘In countries such as America and the UK […] workers take their dogs along with them for a day of work should the office permit it. This is done so as to create more awareness to not let our pets alone at home for too long.’

She also revealed that her office took the opportunity to raise donations to the Carers for Stray and Abandoned Felines (CSAF). ‘It would be wonderful that in the years to come more offices take up this initiative in Malta.’
