Despite being protected trees, a number of fir trees (known locally as Żnuber) were found vandalised and burned over the weekend in the Aħrax nature reserve.
With indications that a fire had spread after the wood was used for burning, the FKNK informed MaltaDaily that the natural massacre was discovered during the cleaning routine in the morning.
‘We encountered damage that could have been catastrophic for the environment and the biodiversity the area embraces’ the FKNK said.

‘It is clear that some persons cut down wood from the protected trees and burned them underneath the very same trees.’
‘There are still those who enjoy the outdoors but do not exercise respect towards these spaces and the environment. We ask that surveillance is increased in these sites – L-Aħrax and l-Miżieb – so that whoever makes use of these spaces takes responsibility and exercises education and respect towards the environment.’
