British Spy Drama ‘Secret Service’ Filming In Malta

Filming is underway in Malta for ‘Secret Service’, a new British spy thriller series from ITV, and is taking place across several historic locations including Valletta, Vittoriosa, Senglea and Dingli.

Based on the novel by ITV journalist Tom Bradby and directed by Oscar winner James Marsh, the five part series began production in early 2025 in both London and Malta.

Around 150 crew members are working on the series, including 122 Maltese and Gozitan professionals. The project is one of eight international productions currently filming on the islands and is also benefiting from Malta’s cash rebate programme.

Minister for National Heritage, the Arts and Local Government Owen Bonnici and Film Commissioner Johann Grech visited the set at Gardjola Gardens in Senglea this week.

The series is expected to air later this year on ITV.

Labour Extends Lead Over Nationalists To 24,000 Votes In Recent Survey

The Labour Party has widened its lead over the Nationalist Party from 12,000 votes in February to 24,000, according to MaltaToday’s April survey.

Labour now enjoys 51.6% support, securing an absolute majority, while the PN trails at 42.8%. Support for third parties, including Momentum and ADPD, remains limited and fragmented.

The PL’s nine-point lead is largely attributed to a sharp decrease in abstention among its 2022 voters and a rise in abstention from former PN voters. Labour is now retaining 80.4% of its 2022 vote share, compared to the PN’s 77.7%.

Turnout is projected at 77.5%, slightly up from February. The survey coincided with Labour’s push to rally its base, highlighting government reforms and internal PN divisions — a strategy that appears to have worked.

Prime Minister Robert Abela maintains a strong 27-point trust lead over PN leader Bernard Grech, who has recorded his weakest showing in over a year. Among 16- to 35-year-olds, Grech’s trust rating has fallen to just 12%.

Government satisfaction has also slightly improved, rising from 2.9 to 3.1 out of 5. Third parties scored low, with Momentum at 2.2% and ADPD at 1.5%.

In Gozo, the Nationalist Party’s lead has narrowed significantly to just one point, down from a 15-point advantage in February. However, the PN has regained control of the Western district, where it now holds a four-point lead.

Third-party support is strongest in the Northern region, with Arnold Cassola’s Momentum reaching 4.2%, while ADPD and other minor parties collectively register 2.6%.

The highest levels of abstention are recorded in the South Eastern region, where 30.3% say they would not vote, followed by the Western region at 27.1%.

Valletta Crowned Challenge league Winners

Valletta FC were officially crowned BOV Challenge League Champions, securing an immediate return to the Premier League after just one season in the second tier.

The historic club, one of the most decorated in Maltese football, suffered relegation last season for the first time in their 120-year history.

However, they responded in emphatic fashion, sealing promotion with four matches to spare and finishing the season on a high note with a convincing 3-0 win over Marsa.

Their triumph was celebrated in style at the National Stadium in Ta’ Qali, where the BOV Challenge League trophy was presented by Ernest Agius, Chief Operations Officer at Bank of Valletta, and Malta FA President Bjorn Vassallo.

Thousands of loyal Valletta supporters were in attendance, turning the occasion into a true celebration of the club’s swift return to top-flight football.

The massive celebrations continued after the match in the capital, with the Valletta streets being filled with thousands of fans.

Valletta Fc Supporters Flocks To Ta’ Qali For Celebrations

As part of their celebrations, Valleta FC organised a Pre-match meet up, which took place at the Ta’ Qali National Stadium.

Followed by the match against Marsa FC which started at 15:30.

After the final whistle, Valletta will be officially presented with the BOV Challenge League Trophy.

The celebrations will then move to Republic Street in Valletta from 19:00, where supporters will continue the party in true Valletta FC style.

Club President Claudio Grech shared his excitement, saying: “As expected, emotions are running high as the Club prepares for what promises to be one of the most memorable days in our history. Saturday marks the end of a season filled with both triumphs and challenges that tested everyone involved. But those very challenges made us stronger—and Saturday will prove just that.”
