According to a recent released report by the National Statistics Office (NSO), the number of reported traffic accidents in the first quarter of 2023 has reached 3,822, marking a concerning increase of 6.3% compared to the same period last year.

The report reveals that the Northern Harbour district recorded the highest number of accidents, accounting for 1,369 cases (35.8% of the total). The situation is further exacerbated by the fact that road traffic casualties have risen by 13.3% to reach 367, with 96 individuals sustaining grievous injuries. Among these, 52 were drivers, 8 were passengers, and 36 were pedestrians, cyclists, or others. Tragically, four fatalities occurred, with one driver and three pedestrians losing their lives. Although there has been a slight decrease in the number of fatalities compared to the same period last year, these incidents demand immediate attention and action.

The data highlights the disproportionate impact on males, with 77.1% of those grievously injured being male. Furthermore, all the fatalities involved males, with individuals aged between 26 to 40 representing 39.8% of the casualties. Passenger cars accounted for the largest number of road traffic casualties at 53.1%, followed by motorcycles at 34.6%. These statistics underscore the pressing need for enhanced road safety measures, increased awareness campaigns, and stricter enforcement to curb reckless driving practices and protect lives on Malta’s roads.
