UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson has urged people to get vaccinated with their booster shots against COVID-19, so as to avoid a spike in cases but also the need to reintroduce restrictions over the winter holidays. With many scientists and medical groups calling on the government to take steps to reduce pressure on the health system of the country, the Office of National Statistics reports that the number of people with the virus in the UK is at the highest level since the second wave’s peak earlier this year.
And yet, Johnson seems to be suggesting that getting the booster will stop the rise in cases, saying that the numbers are being ‘watched’. He says the high cases ‘do not constitute any reason to go to Plan B.’ The majority of the population is vaccinated and hospitalizations and deaths are far lower, but experts and opposition politicians are urging the prime minister to introduce plan B, which would see mandatory face-masking and work from home reintroduced. Vaccine passports for higher risk venues and events would also be reintroduced.
