The Ministry for the Environment, Energy, and Regeneration of the Grand Harbour, in collaboration with Project Green, has officially announced the extension of the Bengħajsa Family Park in Birżebbuġa by issuing a call for tenders for construction work.
This new call for tenders aims to revitalize a previously unused area adjacent to the park, transforming it into a vibrant community space with enhanced landscaping. Initially designated for container storage, the park was converted into a green open area by Project Green and reopened to families and tourists in March 2023.
The planned extension will expand the park by 7,000 square meters, incorporating the planting of over 140 trees, including Holm oak, Carob tree, and Bay Laurel. The development will feature geogrid paving, beaten earth, and gravel paths to improve accessibility, as well as recreational amenities such as slides and inclusive facilities. All surfaces will be 100% permeable, utilizing sustainable materials.
This project is part of a broader initiative to maximize the natural topography of the park, which will also include an amenity block with public toilets and a security room.
Following a site visit with Project Green Chief Operations Officer Perit Beverly Costa and the Birżebbuġa Local Council, Environment Minister Miriam Dalli highlighted the extension as a key part of the government’s commitment to expanding green spaces. She emphasized the park’s role in serving the community and fostering social cohesion.
Perit Beverly Costa noted that the tender’s publication marks a significant milestone, with completion expected by late next year. The Ministry for the Environment, Energy, and Regeneration of the Grand Harbour has been involved in numerous regeneration projects, including various gardens and parks, and is currently preparing additional greening projects across Malta.
