Deputy Prime Minister Ian Borg and Minister for Transport, Infrastructure, and Public Works Chris Bonett officially launched the Vittoriosa City Square Regeneration Project in Birgu.

With an investment of over €3 million, the historic square has been revitalised with modern infrastructure, enhanced accessibility, and the preservation of its rich cultural heritage.

Led by Infrastructure Malta (IM) in collaboration with the Malta Tourism Authority (MTA), the project aims to boost Birgu’s status as a cultural and tourism hub. Key upgrades included the relocation of underground utilities and a redesign of the square to prioritise pedestrian access over vehicles.

The materials and design elements were carefully selected to complement the square’s historical character.

Ian Borg expressed gratitude to all involved, including the Birgu Local Council, and urged residents and visitors to continue making the square a vibrant part of Maltese life.

He emphasised that such projects are integral to the country’s Vision for Malta 2050, improving both tourism and the local quality of life.

Minister Bonett highlighted how the project successfully blends modern infrastructure with historical preservation, transforming the square into a lively, sustainable public space. Despite challenges related to the area’s history, the square now serves as a dynamic community hub.

Birgu Mayor John Boxall thanked the government for supporting this long-awaited project.

The regeneration works included replacing drinking water pipes, installing urban furniture and trees, creating a new rainwater system, removing overhead cables, and preparing for future electric vehicle charging stations.

Modern lighting and bicycle stands were also added to promote sustainability.

The event was attended by Infrastructure Malta CEO Steve Ellul and Malta Tourism Authority CEO Carlo Micallef.

Here’s What To Do When You See An Animal In Need!

Here’s What To Do When You See An Animal In Need!
Apr 11 2025 Share

Seeing a lost or injured animal on the street can be distressing, but knowing how to help can make all the difference. Follow these steps to ensure the animal gets the care it needs.

1. Assess the Situation

Before taking action, observe the animal from a safe distance. If it appears injured, sick, or in immediate danger, avoid making sudden movements that could startle it.

2. Contact Animal Welfare

Call Animal Welfare on the freephone 153 via Servizz.gov and press extension 17. Provide clear details about the animal’s condition and location. The faster you report, the quicker help can arrive.

3. Do Not Attempt Risky Rescues

If the animal is aggressive, scared, or in traffic, avoid putting yourself or the animal in further danger. Let trained professionals handle the situation.

4. Spread Awareness & Consider Adoption

In 2024 alone, Animal Welfare received 15,000 calls and rescued over 1,300 animals, yet only about 500 found new homes. If you can, consider adopting a rescued animal to give them a second chance.

By taking action, you can help ensure that more animals receive the care and love they deserve.
