Prime Minister Robert Abela and Opposition leader Bernard Grech met with and congratulated the Birgu Regatta Club for this year’s victory during the Victory Day Regatta.

The team represented both political leaders with a red team shirt with their surnames printed on the back.

The team secured victory in the final race, ‘Tal-Pass B’Erbgħa, at the Valletta Grand Harbour last month.

This victory marks Vittoriosa’s second consecutive success after sharing last year’s shield with Cospicua. However, it is the first time they have lifted the Victory Day Regatta shield outright since their triumph in 1984.

Malta’s success continued with Tenishia Thornton crowned EU Champion in the U-20 category, and alongside Rylee Borg, winning gold in the doubles. Borg set national records in the U-20 Men’s Snatch (117kg and 120kg) and earned 4th overall.

Camilleri Lagana and Mifsud added another silver in the doubles. The team’s final tally of 3 gold, 3 silver, and 1 bronze marked one of Malta’s most successful weightlifting competitions to date.

Daniel Maldini Continues Family Legacy With Azzurri National Team

Oct 5 2024 Share

For the first time in 22 years, a Maldini is back in the Italy (Azzurri) squad.

Daniel Maldini was called up by Italy coach Luciano Spalletti on Friday for the upcoming Nations League fixtures. He could follow in the footsteps of his father, Paolo, and grandfather, Cesare, both former captains of the Italian national team.

The young Maldini also had an opportunity to represent Venezuela, through his mother, but chose to wait to continue his patronage legacy.

The 22-year-old forward, who currently plays for Monza after coming through AC Milan’s youth system, is set to continue the family legacy.

Paolo Maldini, who earned 126 caps, retired from international football after the 2002 World Cup. Cesare Maldini made his last appearance for Italy in 1963 and also coached the national team.

Alongside Maldini, Spalletti has named three other potential debutants: Juventus goalkeeper Michele Di Gregorio, Milan defender Matteo Gabbia, and Roma midfielder Niccolò Pisilli.

Italy will face Belgium in Rome on October 10 and Israel in Udine four days later. The Azzurri have won both of their previous Nations League matches against France and Israel, sitting at the top of their group.
