Addressing an audience at the Floriana Granaries on, Opposition Leader Bernard Grech rallied his supporters as he vouched for change against what he deems to be current Prime Minister Robert Abela’s ‘comfortable upbringing’. Grech insisted that, unlike Abela, he can understand the concerns of ordinary people due to his humble beginnings.
The Nationalist Party leader criticized Abela for boarding his yacht and darting off to Sicily whilst the country struggles with a pandemic and an FATF grey-listing. He contrasted this with the Opposition’s ‘dynamic and strong’ team with him at the helm who can address the public’s everyday aspirations, costs and struggles. He also urged supporters to lift their heads high and be proud of the historical achievements of the party.
Grech kicked off his speech on Monday evening with the trademark phrase reminiscent of Eddie Fenech Adami ‘Dear Maltese and Gozitan brethren’ (Gheziez huti Maltin u Ghawdxin). During the gathering, which abided by COVID-19 health restrictions, Grech also stated that he does not fear the big fish unlike Abela, who failed, according to Grech, to denounce the wrongs of his predecessor.
Pointing to Abela’s inability to act against Rosianne Cutajar, Edward Zammit Lewis and Carmelo Abela, Grech rallied his supporters to join him towards the road of change. He said that he is running for Prime Minister because he believes truth can be changed. Calling for environmentalists and other activists to join the party, he also accused Labour of lacking ideas and being negative in an attempt to flip the image the PN has been historically labelled with.
