Benna Increases Milk Prices For The Third Time In 2 Years

Benna Increases Milk Prices For The Third Time In 2 Years
Feb 1 2025 Share

Milk prices in Malta have increased once more, with a 1 litre carton of Benna whole milk now costing €1.23, up 8 cents, and Benna skimmed milk rising by 10 cents to €1.10.

This is Benna’s third price hike in two years, following similar rises in December 2023 and 2022 and these new rates, effective today, follow a broader trend of rising costs for everyday items.

Benna, Malta’s leading dairy brand, cited rising production costs, particularly in raw materials like cocoa, and global inflation as reasons for the increases.

The price hikes come amid growing tensions between the government and the Malta Dairy Products consortium, which runs Benna.

The government has expressed concerns over the company’s management and has stated it had no part in the recent price increases.

Metsola Ejects MEP for Heckling During Holocaust Minute of Silence

Feb 1 2025 Share

A far-right MEP was ejected from a special European Parliament session to commemorate the Holocaust after repeatedly heckling during a minute of silence for the victims.

Polish MEP Grzegorz Braun shouted, “Let’s pray for the victims of the Jewish Genocide in Gaza,” during the moment of reflection on Wednesday.

Braun also disrupted the chamber just before the recital of the Kaddish, a musical piece based on a Jewish prayer.

This led European Parliament President Roberta Metsola to order Braun’s removal, a decision that was met with applause from the MEPs present. “Mr. Braun, you leave the chamber now,” Metsola said, as he was escorted out of the plenary chamber in Brussels.

Metsola also offered an apology on behalf of the parliament to Corrie Hermann, the daughter of a Hungarian composer and Holocaust victim, who was addressing the parliament during the ceremony.

Braun, a non-attached member of the European Parliament, has a history of anti-Semitic actions.

Doomsday Clock Moves One Second Closer To Midnight

Doomsday Clock Moves One Second Closer To Midnight
Feb 1 2025 Share

The Doomsday Clock has been moved one second closer to midnight. It now stands at 89 seconds, the closest it has ever been to signalling humanity’s potential destruction.

The clock, created in 1947, was initially set at seven minutes to midnight but has steadily advanced as global threats have intensified. Last year, it remained at 90 seconds.

The Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists, which sets the clock annually, stressed the urgency for global action to address these dangers, with nuclear tensions, AI weaponisation, and the worsening effects of climate change putting the world at a precarious tipping point.

In its statement, the BAS warned “This is a stark signal to world leaders and citizens that global security is at increasing risk.”

As the clock ticks closer to midnight, the message is clear: immediate and concerted efforts are needed to avoid disaster.
