Prime Minister’s Chief Of Staff Glenn Micallef Resigns

Prime Minister's Chief Of Staff Glenn Micallef Resigns
Jun 26 2024 Share

Colonel Mark Mallia is set to replace Glenn Micallef as the head of the secretariat at the Office of the Prime Minister (OPM), according to an announcement by the government on Wednesday. Micallef’s resignation comes amid speculation whether it is linked to the Labour Party’s recent decline in voter support during the MEP elections.

Micallef had been instrumental in managing the Labour Party’s campaigns, including the successful 2022 general election effort alongside close aides Alexander Balzan and Johann Grech, chief of the Malta Film Commission.

Micallef’s departure follows that of Daniel Micallef, the party’s deputy leader, who resigned shortly after the elections.

Prime Minister Robert Abela expressed gratitude to Micallef for his professionalism and service in a published letter, indicating a smooth transition to Mallia, who recently held roles at Transport Malta and the Foundation for Medical Services.

Micallef, previously Director General of Malta’s EU Coordination Department and a prominent figure in student politics, had also overseen the implementation of recommendations from a public inquiry.

The role of OPM head of secretariat is pivotal, overseeing government operations and advising the prime minister, though details on Micallef’s future within the government remain unclear.

Yesterday, San Ġiljan defeated their rivals Neptunes with the score of 12-9 , leading to their victory of the President’s cup.

Although their opponents had tied the score twice in the first two sessions and had taken a two-goal lead, they then exceeded in the later rounds. The turn of events occurred, though, when they lost Jake Muscat to substitution early in the second session because their opponents had more ammunition than they did.

The first session ended all square with the lead alternating. It was balanced all the way with the centre approaches being crowded. The Reds led 5-3 after goals from Steve Camilleri and Mark Castillo in the second session.

After Jeremy Abela and Aaron Younger each scored twice to tie the game, Luigi Mallia gave Neptunes a 6-5 advantage. San Ġiljan’s Younger completed his hat-trick, and Matthew Zammit made the score 7–6. After goals from Camilleri and Dimitri Kholod for Neptunes, Jake Bonavia, Nikolai Zammit, and Ben Plumpton gave San Ġiljan the lead again. Before Camilleri concluded the game at 12-9, Gabriel Bonavia completed the victory.
