A Beginner’s Guide To Handling Malta’s Heat Situation

A Beginner's Guide To Handling Malta's Heat Situation
Jul 21 2023 Share

As Malta battles a scorching heatwave with temperatures soaring beyond 40 degrees, power cuts have become an unfortunate reality for many residents. Dealing with blackouts during such extreme heat can be challenging, but there are ways to stay safe and comfortable. In this article, we’ll share five essential tips to help you handle power cuts and beat the heat during this challenging period.

Prepare an Emergency Kit

Before the power goes out, create an emergency kit containing essential items such as flashlights, batteries, portable fans, and a first aid kit. These items will prove invaluable during a power cut, ensuring you have access to light, air circulation, and basic medical supplies if needed.

Stay Hydrated

Hydration is key during a heatwave. Keep a good supply of bottled water or fill containers in advance. When the power goes out, your refrigerator may no longer work, and keeping perishables fresh will be a challenge. Stay away from caffeinated or alcoholic beverages, as they can contribute to dehydration. Opt for chilled water and natural fruit juices instead.

Create a Cool Oasis

Prepare a designated cool area in your home. Close curtains or blinds to block out direct sunlight and keep the indoor temperature as low as possible. If you have a basement or a shaded area outside, consider spending time there during the hottest hours of the day. Use wet towels or take cold showers to cool down quickly.

Minimise Energy Usage

During a heatwave, the strain on the power grid is heightened, leading to increased chances of power cuts. Help reduce energy demands by conserving electricity. Turn off non-essential appliances, lights, and electronics. Unplug chargers when not in use, as they still draw power even when idle. By minimising your energy consumption, you’ll contribute to the stability of the grid.

Secure the best A/Cs in the game

Once temperatures begin to rise, most Maltese flock to their Air Conditioning Unit remotes to turn on their summer saviour. However, not everyone can put their mind to rest that their A/C has got them covered. That’s why, now more than ever, the people over at Arjakon are here for us, providing all types and sizes of air conditioning systems to help us cope with the hot summer months.

Facing a power cut amidst a blistering heatwave can be daunting, but by preparing in advance and following these five essential tips, you can stay safe, cool, and comfortable. So stay informed, take care of yourself, and contact Arjakon ASAP.

Send this to someone who needs to sort out their A/C situation ASAP.

Malta Braves Fifth Day Of Power Cuts As Enemalta Tries To Keep Up

Malta Braves Fifth Day Of Power Cuts As Enemalta Tries To Keep Up
Jul 21 2023 Share

Thousands of people in multiple localities across Malta and Gozo are currently braving a string of constant power cuts amid a record-breaking heatwave, all while local energy company Enemalta attempts to fix the situation.

The power cut situation entered its fifth day today, with blackouts in Senglea, Birkirkara, San Gwann, Rabat, Dingli, Kalkara, Vittoriosa, Cospicua, Zabbar and Marsascala. Rightfully so, many took to social media to address their grievances, with some revealing that they actually slept on the roof of their home to escape the heated confines of their homes.

An individual writing to Malta Daily also shared that some zones are not even being shown on the Enemalta power cut map, as various members of the community, particularly elderly and animals, remain in the figurative and literal dark on the situation.

Meanwhile, Enemalta has remained active on social media claiming that it will ‘continue to help customers impacted by electricity network disruptions’. The energy company wrote that workers are repairing underground cable faults and other damages, utilising ‘specialised teams of engineers, technicians, cable fault locators and cable jointers, excavation contractors and other workers’.

Enemalta Chairman Ryan Fava and Enemalta CEO Jonathan Cardona confirmed that Malta registered a peak demand of 624 megawatts, the second record demand for the Maltese Islands in two days.

Have you experienced any power cuts?
