Youths called on for sustainability conference by Energy and Water Agency

A newly launched conference by the Energy and Water Agency is targeting youths interested in sustainability.

The conference aims at discussing themes that affect the everyday life and the future – including everything from green jobs to urban greening.

The Ministry for the Environment, Energy and Enterprise will be working together with the Energy and Water Agency to deliver this conference as part of the European Sustainable Development Week.

The conference will take place on the 1st of June at the Excelsior Hotel at 9:30. Those interested youths are encouraged to attend to discuss these important themes by sending an email on [email protected].

Malta’s economy grew by 7.6% in first three months of 2022

According to statistics published by the National Statistics Office (NSO), Malta’s economy saw a growth of 7.6% in the first three months of this year.

With substantial increases in private consumption, investment and net exportation, the news was welcomed by Prime Minister Robert Abela via Twitter, who tweeted:

In the first quarter, Malta’s economic growth was one and a half times that observed in the Euro area, with record level private consumption and investment. We will continue to support our economy’s resilience and build a new prosperity. – RA

In a period of international challenges, including the war in Ukraine and the COVID-19 pandemic, the national good increased to around €3.8 billion. This means an increase of around €366.7 million – or approximately 11% – when compared to the same period last year.

This means that the first three months of 2022 is showing the same amount of growth as the first three months of 2019 – a period of time before the pandemic struck.

Comino filled with deckchairs before visitors make their way to the island

NGO Moviment Graffiti took to social media to raise concerns about the state of Comino as summer rolls in and beachgoers are expected to visit the little island in between Malta and Gozo.

The NGO revealed that its members took photos of Blue Lagoon at the end of the previous week. ‘Every inch of the bay is full of umbrellas and deckchairs belonging to a private company which took over the public bay.’

‘At the time the photo was taken, almost all deckchairs were still unoccupied’ said the NGO. It also pointed out that there is no guarantee that a visitor to the island has a place reserved on a deckchair, even if one pays for a spot.

‘A net of commerce which took over Blue Lagoon’, said the NGO. ‘And where are the authorities to address all this? Nowhere.’

‘The chaos transformed one of the most beautiful bays in Malta into an overcrowded, noisy and dirty hell. Comino, a Natura 2000 site protected by law, has been transformed into a private lido’ said the post.

‘Give us Comino back!’.

You can now enjoy Maltese pastizzi and Kinnie in Yokohama, Japan

If you’re in Japan and you’re missing some classic Maltese delicacies, then you will be delighted to know that a pastizzeria has just opened up in the country’s second largest city.

The recently opened ‘Shibuya Arrowin’ (Pastizzi Specialty Store) is now offering locals and tourists alike in Yokohama the chance to bite into a crunchy traditional pastizz.

But that’s not all as the shop is also offering up Cisk or Kinnie for the foodies to wash it down. The Menu also shows what seems to be a Maltese Ftira on offer, rounding up the selection of traditional Maltese goods.

The ‘ricotta pastizz’ costs around ¥230, which is just around €2, whereas the ftira costs around ¥1,000 – approximately €7.50. Yokohama is the second largest city in Japan, but one can already find Maltese pastizzi and other traditional goods in Tokyo.

But it seems as though Maltese cuisine is making quite a hit in Japan as the expansion of this little business is now enthusiastically sharing our local favourites.
