Baby’s Rescue Highlights Ongoing Challenges in Mediterranean Sea Operations

A poignant photograph has surfaced, depicting a baby among those stranded at sea, highlighting the critical importance of timely rescue operations. The image features a 20-month-old boy named Mohseen, who was rescued in the Maltese search and rescue zone after being saved at sea south of Lampedusa.

In recent months, Malta’s rescue teams have been actively involved in various operations. In July 2023, two lifeguards from the Malta Red Cross rescued four children from rough seas at Għajn Tuffieħa Bay. Despite a double red flag warning indicating dangerous swimming conditions, the lifeguards entered the water to assist the children, preventing a potential tragedy.

Additionally, in August 2023, a team from SOS Malta, led by John Gera, responded to a 6.2-magnitude earthquake in Italy’s central Umbria region. The team, equipped with trained search and rescue dogs, conducted searches in collapsed buildings, aiding in locating survivors and providing support to the affected communities.

These incidents underscore the dedication and bravery of Malta’s rescue teams, who continue to play a vital role in humanitarian efforts both locally and internationally.

PN Leads Labour in Gozo, but a Clear Majority Remains Elusive

PN Leads Labour in Gozo, but a Clear Majority Remains Elusive
Feb 2 2025 Share

A MaltaToday survey of 666 Gozitan respondents reveals that the Nationalist Party (PN) is on track to reclaim Gozo, leading the Labour Party (PL) by nearly six points. The survey, conducted between January 16 and 28, indicates that while the PN is at 47.4% and the PL at 41.7%, it may still fall short of an absolute majority.

This marks a significant shift from the 2022 general election, where the PL enjoyed a 10-point lead. The PN has gained 409 votes since then, while Labour has lost 3,770. A notable 2,015 votes have shifted to third parties, which now hold 10.9% of the vote.

Prime Minister Robert Abela leads Opposition leader Bernard Grech by nine points in the trust barometer, but 30% of PN voters do not trust either leader. Voter trends show Labour losing votes mainly to abstention, while the PN faces a greater loss to third parties.

The survey also highlights demographic trends, with the PN performing better among older voters and women, while the PL leads among younger Gozitans. The rise of third parties is notably strong among voters aged 16-35.

Benna Increases Milk Prices For The Third Time In 2 Years

Benna Increases Milk Prices For The Third Time In 2 Years
Feb 1 2025 Share

Milk prices in Malta have increased once more, with a 1 litre carton of Benna whole milk now costing €1.23, up 8 cents, and Benna skimmed milk rising by 10 cents to €1.10.

This is Benna’s third price hike in two years, following similar rises in December 2023 and 2022 and these new rates, effective today, follow a broader trend of rising costs for everyday items.

Benna, Malta’s leading dairy brand, cited rising production costs, particularly in raw materials like cocoa, and global inflation as reasons for the increases.

The price hikes come amid growing tensions between the government and the Malta Dairy Products consortium, which runs Benna.

The government has expressed concerns over the company’s management and has stated it had no part in the recent price increases.
