Dragon Ball Manga Creator Passes At The Age Of 68

Mar 8 2024 Share

Renowned manga artist Akira Toriyama, creator of the beloved Dragon Ball series, has sadly passed away at the age of 68 on March 1st, succumbing to complications from an acute subdural hematoma. The news was confirmed by Bird Studio, the manga company he founded in 1983.

Born in Nagoya, Japan in 1955, Toriyama’s journey in the world of manga began with humble origins. Despite facing initial setbacks with early works like “Wonder Island,” he persevered and eventually found fame with the breakout hit “Dr. Slump” in 1980. However, it was his creation of “Dragon Ball” in 1984 that catapulted him to international stardom.

“Dragon Ball,” serialized in Weekly Shōnen Jump, captivated audiences with its blend of martial arts, adventure, and humor. The series introduced iconic characters like Son Goku and spawned a multimedia franchise encompassing TV adaptations, movies, video games, and more, making Toriyama one of Japan’s highest-selling manga authors.

Beyond “Dragon Ball,” Toriyama’s influence extended to the world of video games, where he contributed character designs to titles like Dragon Quest and Chrono Trigger. He even ventured into automotive design, creating an electric car released by Japan’s CQ Motors in 2005.

Throughout his career, Toriyama remained relatively private, often using a cyborg avatar to represent himself in public. Despite his fame, he continued to work on various projects, including film adaptations within the Dragon Ball universe.

Toriyama’s passing marks the end of an era in manga and pop culture. His unique creativity and contributions have left an indelible mark on the industry, earning him accolades and admiration from fans worldwide. While his physical presence may be gone, his legacy will continue to inspire future generations of artists and storytellers.

Too Toi’s Annual Easter Concert ‘A Dream Is A Wish’ At Teatru Manoel

Too Toi’s Annual Easter Concert ‘A Dream Is A Wish’ At Teatru Manoel
Mar 8 2024 Share

Teatru Manoel announces A Dream is A Wish, the annual TOI TOI Easter Concert which promises a night of unforgettable live music for the whole family to enjoy.

Experiencing your favourite music performed live by the Palace String Orchestra is an extremely enchanting experience, and experiencing it with your family by your side only makes it more magical. This Easter weekend, TOI TOI, Teatru Manoel’s Learning and Participation programme, invites movie and music lovers of all ages to the national theatre for a night of live music from all their favourite family films.

A Dream is A Wish will take audiences on a journey through time with the development of music written for the big and little screen, beginning with a famous animated classic or two. Featuring music by Alan Menken, Pasek & Paul, Phil Collins, Lin Manuel Miranda and many more, people of all ages will be able to enjoy this special Easter treat.

Whilst it may be impossible to cover an entire genre in one evening, TOI TOI Learning & Participation Manager, Kate Fenech Field says that, “by journeying through selected music somewhat chronologically, it gives the audience a clear perspective of how a genre developed and grew into the music we enjoy today.”

The annual TOI TOI Easter Concert first began in 2015 in a collaboration between Teatru Manoel and local legends Big Band Brothers, and aims to provide a night of high-quality live music for audiences aged four and up. This year’s edition, called A Dream is A Wish, is one of the events in the MaltaBiennale.art 2024 programme, and is in collaboration with the Valletta Cultural Agency with the support of Bank of Valletta.

Fenech Field explains, “The TOI TOI Annual Easter Concert offers a space in the calendar for all the family to join together in a collective experience, bringing the older and younger members of our community into one space to enjoy stunning music in our beautiful National Theatre.”

This year’s concert features music by The Palace String Orchestra under the baton of dynamic young conductor Ryan Paul Abela and Artistic and Administrative Manager Stefania Grech Vella, alongside direction and vocal arrangements by Kate Fenech Field, and performances by Tezara Saliba, Francesco Nicodeme, Michaela Agius, Clara Sciberras, Noel Zarb, Paolo Micallef, Bettina Zammit, and some very, very special surprise guests. There have been three Main Stage shows on Easter Sunday produced by TOI TOI since 2021, with previous editions covering the development of genres such as big band, pop, and musical theatre. This year, TOI TOI is adding an extra show on Easter Saturday too, so that even more families can experience the magic of A Dream is A Wish!

“It’s a great introduction to orchestral instruments, something which we hope helps to encourage more people to take up and learn to play themselves. Our programme actively encourages our audience to participate in special moments throughout our shows and we love to see people of all ages enjoying singing along with their favourite songs. The whole programme strongly advocates singing for your mental and physical wellbeing,” continued Fenech Field.

From the team that brought you The Sound of Musicals and Hakuna Matata comes a dazzling evening of entertainment with some of Malta’s top stage talent. Teatru Manoel Learning & Participation Programme, TOI TOI, known for its inclusive and educational productions, welcomes the incredible Palace String Orchestra to their debut at the National Theatre. A Dream is A Wish is packed full of singalong moments for everyone in the family to enjoy. Showcasing music from family-favourite films, you’ll be whisked from castles to fjords, islands to jungles and a diversion through a chocolate factory thrown in for good measure!

A Dream is A Wish is produced in collaboration with the Valletta Cultural Agency. TOI TOI is proudly supported by the Bank of Valletta. Performances are happening on Saturday 30th and Sunday 31st March at 6 pm, with tickets prices ranging from €12to €20. However, as part of their Theatre for Everyone scheme, patrons can currently benefit from a 20% discount through Teatru Manoel’s early bird offer.
