Alex Borg Promises Higher Stipends And Better Salaries For Healthcare Workers To Tackle Staff Shortages

In a continuation of the Nationalist Party’s healthcare proposals, PN Leader Alex Borg outlined a series of measures aimed at addressing staff shortages in the health sector and attracting more talent to Malta and Gozo.

Speaking as part of the party’s ongoing campaign, Borg emphasised that investment in infrastructure must be matched by investment in people. He announced plans to increase stipends for healthcare students to at least the level of the minimum wage, alongside a 25% increase in stipends for all students.

He also pledged improvements in working conditions and salaries for healthcare professionals, with a commitment to negotiate a new financial package within the first 100 days of a Nationalist government.

To address immediate workforce gaps, Borg said the party would temporarily remove costs related to hiring foreign workers, including visa and work permit fees, in an effort to ease recruitment pressures within the sector.

In parallel, the PN is proposing measures to attract Maltese professionals currently working abroad. These include a five-year 0% income tax incentive for returning specialists, with the aim of bringing back expertise and expanding services currently unavailable locally.

Borg reiterated that the broader objective is to build a strong, accessible, and preventive healthcare system, supported by sustained investment in infrastructure, workforce, and treatment access.

He added that these measures complement the party’s wider strategy to reduce waiting times by shifting focus from waiting lists to the actual time patients spend waiting for care, with the goal of delivering faster treatment and improved patient outcomes.
